Worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water, two in five people do not have a basic facility for washing their hands with soap and water. 

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vital importance of sanitation, hygiene and adequate access to clean water to prevent and contain disease.  According to the World Health Organization, hand washing is one of the most effective actions that can be taken to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the COVID-19 virus.

    • Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the world's population and this percentage is expected to increase. More than 1.7 billion people currently live in river basins where water consumption exceeds recharge.

    • 4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services, such as toilets or latrines.

    • More than 80% of wastewater resulting from human activities is discharged into rivers or the sea without any treatment, which causes its contamination.

    • Every day, around 1000 children die from diarrheal diseases associated with poor hygiene.

    • Approximately 70% of all the water extracted from rivers, lakes and aquifers is used for irrigation.

    • Floods and other water-related disasters account for 70% of all natural disaster-related deaths
