Meet the 11-year-old science whiz who invented water-testing device ~ 3-15-18

-Brief summary
-Non-fiction signpost
-Answer the question

This article was about an 11-year old girl, Gitanjali Rao, who invented a water testing device to help towns that have high lead counts in their water supply. She was inspired by the story of Flint, Michigan, where there was too much lead in their water. Gitanjali participated in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. She won the top prize of $25,000. I found the signpost of numbers and stats. Numbers and stats are when you're reading and you notice a specific number or statistic. The number I found was the amount of money Gitanjali earned, $25,000. The author used this number because it shows the readers what you can earn if you really try your best to invent something new. This could also inspire more young people to solve problems in their community, just like Gitanjali did.

Minutes: 20
Pages: 17

There's a dance coming up at Hailey and Clara's school, and both of the girls secretly have boys that they want to ask to the dance. If I was either of the boys, I would feel awkward whenever talking to Hailey or Clara, because the other one can always hear what you're saying. But, I wouldn't want to reject them either, because then that makes you seem like a bad person. Both of the girls are really nice, so I would probably not reject her. I would also feel like I would have to be good friends with the other twin's boyfriend, because they would be pretty close to me all lot of the time. I hope that the actual boys feel the same way I do, and they won't reject either of the girls.

Minutes: 20
Pages: 18

In the book, the twins are arguing even more. Hailey wants to go to college out of state, and Clara just wants to go to the college that their parents work at. These situations must be hard for Hailey and Clara's friends, because it must be hard for them to know who to agree with. Hailey and Clara also can't really get away from each other, so one always knows what the other is doing. I feel bad fro the girls' parents, because they are the ones who have to deal with all the drama and fighting in their own home. The girls can't even have separate rooms, so that doesn't make the situation any better. I agree with Clara, that it would be easier to go to college where their parents work, but Hailey is right when it comes to the fact that eventually they will have to live without their parents, so why can't it be now?

Minutes: 40
Pages: 32

The image I chose was a picture of a college. All the girls can really think about right now is college, because it is a really big part of their lives. I chose this picture because it portrays college as a huge and scary place, which is probably why the girls are so nervous to go. Imagine drawing attention to you wherever you go, meanwhile on a huge campus filled with so many people you don't know. The college that Hailey and Clara's parents work at would probably be the safest way to go, but I've heard that college isn't as big and scary as they make it seem. I just hope that the girls make their decision about what they're going to do before it's too late.
