What is a cliffhanger?

A cliffhanger happens when a character faces an important decision, but the story ends before we find out what they choose.

Food for thought: Why do you think the writer ended the story this way?

'At dinner time, Smook could not even look at his snailburgers and seaweed salad. He already missed the boy under the bed. He went and got the hammer…'

INSTRUCTIONS:

• You are to craft an alternative ending to the story.

• You MUST use Show Not Tell (SNT) and Face Action Voice (FAV) in your paragraph to describe character feelings and thoughts.

• You are to write a different ending with at least 60 words in one paragraph (one Padlet post).

• Remember to write your name as the Subject. Write the word count at the end of your paragraph.

• Refer to Ms Amirah's example.

Idea 1:

Smook managed to break the trapdoor with the hammer. The boy entered Smook's room again and they played secretly together. From then on, they became best friends and had regular play dates without the knowledge of Smook's mother.

Idea 2:

Smook tried to break the door open but the loud hacking alerted Smook's mother. She found out what Smook was doing and decided to punish him.

Idea 3:

Smook wanted to open the trapdoor when he tripped over Colossa's tail and fell on to the floor. Smook fainted. In his unconsciousness, he dreamt that he woke up in the boy's world and that he had accidentally unlocked a secret portal- the boy's toilet bowl.

Idea 4:

Smook tried to lift the hammer but it was too heavy for his puny tentacles, so he gave up on his mission and went back to his dinner. Besides, he had a lot of homework to complete.

Ending:

Smook peered around cautiously (Action) for any signs of his mother. The coast was clear. In the room down the hall, Smook could her snoring loudly (Action). She’s fast asleep. Smook heaved his bed out of the way to reveal the trapdoor. “Whew! That was heavy!” he panted breathlessly (Voice). With a mischievous grin (Face), he unscrewed the nails of the trapdoor and eagerly flung it open (Action). “Now, to find the boy!” he squealed (Voice).

Rebuilt mom’s plants and nails on the door on the other side , and now smook set off to find the boy , after stumbling across a house ,🏡 smook looked closely . he said:” I see a boy who is exactly like him “ ! Now smook realised that him and the boy are neighbours ! 😄 unpon entering his dad was strict 😫 , so he found another way in . Smook found he an open window he climbed in and found the boy , now they realised their houses are close , now both friends can play with each other

Idea 2 smook got his hammer from the bathroom that he had’nt used 2 years ago to smash moms trap wall after he had not rebuilt it at all he can blame it on his sister , the dog 🐶, he quickly set off with a cannon that he borrowed from his other neighbour which s not the boy to launch him to San Francisco.

After a launch he had planned to pack snacks like his snail burgers, seaweed mixed with spider 🕷️dressing ,before even launching , so he surrives himself, he also brought some water it is important to keep hydrated 🥤now he walked for some kilometres and decided to go back but now , the Time is 5am , once he reaches back , smook will be having no tv time with his friends :(

Idea 3 : smook instantly asked his mom to watch movies with the boy who had been pushed in smook’s house , so mom decided to just break the trap dooor to let smook out , smook had a dad with a car so he borrowed it for a important mission : to save the boy , he didn’t know how to drive but had watched videos of people driving around him , but he had confidence so he vrooooooomed to a house which looked like it is where he lived smook proudly approached the boys dad , and was like “can you let me in I’m his friend from school “ the dad said “ no I have work to do alright 👍 “ now smook really wanted to play with him , he didn’t care now he rushed though the house and found the boy sitting happily playing his tablet , and now they played together in peace , after playing and getting to know each other alll of them said their good byes now smook needed to get back with dads car

Idea 4 ( last one ) smook gladly asked for a wish to teleport to the boy instantly , he was really happy that he could play with him , but couldn’t find the way back
