Rape is a form of sexual assault, but not all sexual assault is rape. The term rape is often used as a definition to specifically include sexual penetration without consent. Another form of sexual assault is sexual misconduct. Sexual Misconduct is; engaging in oral sexual conduct or anal sexual conduct with another person without such person's consent; or engaging in sexual conduct with an animal or a dead human body.

Every 98 seconds, another person experiences sexual assault. In Hollywood, there is a lot of actors coming forward to confess if they were molested or even raped. Some people are so mentally damaged by this that they cannot even come forward, they are too scared or they think speaking up will not help. Or "Hush money" is presented to someone after sexual assault. These are some of the reasons why only 6 in 1,000 rapists are caught.
There are 21 types of sexual assault. They are listed in another column. Rape in the first degree is;

Engaging in sexual intercourse with another person:

By forcible compulsion; or

Who is incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless; or

Who is less than eleven years old; or

Who is less than thirteen years old and the actor is eighteen years old or more.

Rape in the third degree is;

Engaging in sexual intercourse with another person who is incapable of consent by reason of some factor other than being less than seventeen years old;

Being twenty-one years old or more, he or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person less than seventeen years old; or

Engaging in sexual intercourse with another person without such person's consent where such lack of consent is by reason of some factor other than incapacity to consent.

The main character, Melinda Sordino had been raped in the second degree. Her raper was 18 and at the time she was fourteen. She did not agree, and no consent= rape. This made me want to research sexual assault because its large in the media right now and because Melinda was raped. I did not know of how many types of sexual assault there are. Melinda went to a summer party, where she met her raper. She got drunk and did not realize that she was being raped until it was happening. She tried to fight, and tried to say no, but he persisted, and she had to go through the pain of rape.
The aftermath of rape is terrible. People are left mentally scarred and helpless. I do not think I have evermet someone who had been sexually assaulted, but my mom had a friend in high school who was raped, which lead to her suicide. Melinda did not commit suicide, thankfully. She did mentally change though. According to Melinda's father in a meeting, Melinda was once a happy kid with B's and a love for life. When she entered high school. she was failing classes, and did not seem to care about anything. If this is true, then rape really changed Melinda. According to RAINN, a way to cope with rape trauma is to spend time with friends to boost happiness. Melinda's friends all left her, so she had no one to be comforted by and no one to tell her "It's okay."
