Peregrine Falcons are one of the most versatile birds in the world. They are found in every continent besides Antarctica. Peregrine Falcons mostly live in open spaces. These birds live in cities, deserts, tundra, and on bridges. These are the places that Peregrine Falcons build there nests. The falcons also migrate south, like most other birds. This is where you can find a Peregrine Falcon.

Like all living things, Peregrine Falcons have to eat. They are carnivores, so they eat meat. They mainly eat other birds. They also eat rodents and bats. Some specific birds are starlings, pigeons, doves, and ducks. The peregrine falcon has very few predators. These are the predators and prey of a Peregrine Falcon.

Physical Characteristics

Peregrine Falcons have good physical characteristics that help them be so fast. They weigh about 18.8 - 56.5 oz. This helps them to be quicker because they have less weight to carry. They are about 39.6 - 43.2 in. long. The falcons have long pointed wings and long feathers, which helps them pick up more speed. While diving, they tuck in their wings to form a bullet shape. This helps them drop faster while diving. These are the physical characteristics of a Peregrine Falcon.

Stages of Development

When an egg of a Peregrine Falcon hatches, the parents have to raise it. The parents even care for the baby chick while it is in the egg. The parents incubate the egg until it hatches. Peregrine Falcon chicks are called eyases. They eat lots of food, and expand their size by 10x in three weeks. While the females care for the young, the males gather food. In around 34 - 39 days the eyases are already flying. From then on, the falcons only change size, speed, and color. Then they live for 17 years. Those are the stages of development of a Peregrine Falcon.

Hunting Behaviors

Sense Peregrine Falcons eat meat, they have to hunt other animals. When Peregrine Falcons hunt, they will usually not fly straight on. This is because the falcons are not as quick as some of their prey. The Peregrine Falcons will dive down to their prey. Usually, they catch their prey, but sometimes they miss. If they miss, they will usually leave that animal alone and find a new one. Mostly, they hunt other birds, so they can fly back up if they miss. That is how a Peregrine Falcon hunts it's prey.

Peregrine Falcons have a bad history. They didn't do anything bad, but bad things were done to them. Some people were using DDT, a pesticide, that harmed many animals, including the peregrine falcon. It got so bad that the Peregrine Falcon almost went extinct. DDT thinned their eggs and sometimes they even broke during incubation. Then the use of DDT was banned, and the Peregrine Falcons made a huge comeback. They went from endangered to least concern. Now they have a steady population that is at a good number. That is the history and threats of the Peregrine Falcon
