After gaining their independence from France, the Ivory Coast established diplomatic relations with the U.S. in 1960. Between when they gained their independence and the first election occurred in 2011, there were many rebellions and small group revolts. Ouattara, the elected president, was reelected in 2015. The U.S. and the Ivory Coast have had a good relationship. the U.S. is also part of the effort to help the Ivory Coast get out of their past crisis (UN Operation). In fact, they paid over a quarter of the expenses. The U.S.'s main goals through the operation was to restore peace, encourage disarmament, and reunifying the country. Also, the U.S. wants them to eventually support a democratic government.
The Ivory Coast is eligible for specialized trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The U.S. and Ivory Coast are also both members of the West African and Monetary Union. Both countries provide each other with important imports. The Ivory Coast's embassy in the U.S. is located in Washington DC.
https://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2846.htm

During the Cold War, the Ivory Coast was more favorable towards the western countries in the world. In 1960, they became part of the United Nations and maintained many diplomatic contacts. Also, they announced their reestablished diplomatic relationship with Israel in 1986. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/africa/iv-forrel.htm
The Ivory Coast had a stronger relationship with France than they did with the U.S. In the past, they were the most loyal to the U.S. out of all the African countries that were part of the United Nations. They often supported the U.S.'s decisions. After many years of trading bonds, the U.S. was confident in saying the Ivory Coast was their main trading partner out of the African Nations. Also, foreign policy makers agreed that the Ivory Coast was a great example of successful capitalism. Although the two countries relationship was usually very strong and positive, there have been a few bumps in the road. For example, one of the Ivory Coast's representatives blamed the U.S. for their large debt, blaming the system of international trade. http://countrystudies.us/ivory-coast/79.htm
