White is generally a pure, innocent colour, however off-white can be interpreted as an impurity that has infected the state of pure white. Society before the bio-terrorist attack, as presented by corporations, was artificial (in the compounds). Everything was seemingly perfect - too perfect. Jimmy's mother likened it to a "theme-park". There is no crime and was safe, however there was the ever looming threat of nuclear attack and disease. The off white may also refer to a lab - genetic modification was impressive and was an enormous contribution to society, but was it ethically justified? Is it as Jimmy's mother - sacrilegious?

Camouflage is a colour with multiple shades ranging from tan to darker green. This is somewhat representative of what the society has become, in that the new 'natural' way that the Crakers live is actually built on the ruins of the previous, overly technological society. Dark and murky green colours are very prominent, which display raw, pure nature, however, lighter and more pale colours (like tan and light green) are still present and shining through, which, comparatively, seem unnatural, but are trying to blend in. Green is associated with nature and growth. The world after 'the event' is beginning to be taken over by natural growth.
Fluorescence suggests an aspect of artificiality. Although plant growth is taking over the structures built by humans, many of the natural organisms have been killed off by humans or by genetically modified organisms.

A bucket is a modern object associated with people; children play with them on beaches and adults use them for housework.
The bucket is empty and faded as it no longer has a use in this new world - no more houses for housework and no more family outings or children to play with it.
It was found abandoned - despite the absence of humans in this new world they still have an impact on the environment.
