they didn't considered giving asher the assignment of instructor of 3

if threes did thing bad things they would get slapped with a wand and if you distinguish the difference between two words you would get slapped

asher couldn't tell the difference between snack and smack so whenever he wanted a snack he would ask for a smack resulting in him getting smacked

for a while he wouldn't even talk 

asher got the assignment of director of recreation

he also has the capacity to see beyond

1 go immediately at the end if school hours each day to the annex entrance behind the house  of old and present yourself to the attendant

jonas realizes he won't have free time and is shocked by some of the rules

since he can ask rude questions he wanted to ask his father if everyone was allowed to lie once they turned 12 but if he said no jonas wouldn't know if he was lying

he introduces himself to the old receiver and fumbles around with his words 

the old receiver says that jonas is the new receiver from now on

jonas points out that the man is old which is a compliment 

he isn't that old but the job has worn him out a lot 

the man explains that he will transmit memories to jonas

he talks about the weight of the memories and compares it to snow 

jonas doesn't know what snow is 

the man decides to begin there and that's the first thing he is going to transmit to jonas

he starts going down the hill going fast but eventually slowing down because of the snow building up at the bottom and he slows down to a  stop

the man explains climate control but also the committee needed sameness which is why there's no hills

the man showed him the same sunshine memory except this time he got a sunburn

during the next couple of weeks jonas learns more about colours

jonas thinks it's not fair that the world can't see colours

gabe can't choose what toy he wants

he agrees with the giver and realizes that people can make wrong choices which makes it safer 

there is still a part of jonas that feels frustrated 

he explains how he feels angry all the time 

he is frustrated that his friends are satisfied with their dull lives

he tries to get asher to see colour in the flower petals he touches asher which isn't allowed outside the family unit 

the giver transmits the memory of killing elephants

this is the first time that jonas is seeing different skin tones and diversity

the memory ends with the elephants mate finding it there on the ground

jonas tells lily that her comfort object (an elephant) actually used to exist 

he tries to transmit part of the memory to her but it doesn't work and he ends up hurting her a bit

jonas asks the giver if he has a spouse or if he can even apply for one 

his spouse lives with the childless adults

its difficult to have a family because they can't use the books and he can't talk about his job with them

the last receiver of memory from ten years ago were realized to the world and jonas never got them back

they needed a receiver to take the pain from everyone else

jonas starts talking about how the brain works but the giver cut him off

the giver says that they don't know what they're are talking about 

he says its pointless without memories 

the giver would send jonas away some days because of all the pain he was in but jonas and the giver decide that jonas was ready to take some of that pain away from him

the giver said that these memories gave him wisdom 

the committee wanted the birth mothers to give birth to 4 children instead of 3 so that they could have more labourers but the giver advised that they didn't because the population could go hungry because many generations back the population was starving from overpopulation 

the giver told the committee  not to shoot the plane down because he was probably lost he didn't know for sure but he used his wisdom

jonas wants the memories of destruction because he wants wisdom

gabe kept on growing

but during nighttime he was still awake 

there's twins being born but one of them will be released they keep the heaver one

he hoped that larissa would be the one to greet the new child 

jonas wanted gabe in his room

gabe slept soundly at first

then gabe woke up

jonas accidentally gave half the memory of sailing to gabe

jonas saved half the memory 

it was with gabe forever now

soldiers were on the ground dead, or begging for water their mothers or death. 

skreiking horses lay on the ground after being stabbed

jonas heard the thud of cannons 

overwhelmed by pain he lay there for hours watching everything around him die

finally jonas couldn't take anymore and would "welcome death itself"

when jonas opened his eyes he was on the bed 

the giver couldn't look at jonas because he couldn't bear to see what he had done to jonas

the memory is about a family  on christmas morning  jonas asked the giver who people were 

the giver said they were grandparents

jonas realizes that his parents have parents

he couldn't name the strong emotion

the giver tells him it was love

jonas wishes there was love in his life he wishes that the giver was his grandfather 


he recognizes that it is too dangerous to live that way

when the giver told him to explain the analogy that jonas used was the fire that was burning in the room was dangerous although he liked the warmth

jonas asked his parents if they love him

they chuckled and told him to pay attention to precicsion of language"

jonas was confused 

the word is meaningless 

this made him more confused because the emotion he felt during the memory was not meaningless 

when they asked him if he understood what they meant he said yes 

that was his first lie to his parents

gabe's crib is in jonas' room 

in the middle of the night jonas whispers to gave about memories and love 

the next morning jonas threw away his pill

jonas finds asher playing with these other kids shooting each other 

jonas stops when he realizes that they are basically playing a game of war and he experienced  real war so he wasn't interested in playing 

everyone left 

jonas tells everyone to stop playing and then asher gets angry because he is the director of recreation 

jonas tries to explain but asher just apologizes 

gave starts to say his name "gay" is the closest thing to his name 

it's almost december so lily will get her bicycle 

jonas' father says that twins are going to be born so the lighter one will get released 

they weigh the baby and find out which is heaver

they prepare the smaller one for realease 

lily starts blabering about what if the twins meet and have the same name etc.

he couldn't physical hurt her so he gave her emotional pain he started off with loneliness a child being taken from it's parents 

rosemary was no longer happy 

she barely laughed ever 

one day at the end of the lesson she stood up kissed him on the cheek and applied for release 

jonas realized that only five weeks worth of memories were released but the community went crazy 

the elders added a rule that recievers can't request release 

the giver was devestaed and didn't help the community

jonas wondered what would happen if he feel into a lake or something

the giver said that he should stay away from lakes

jonas asked the giver how the begging was different for him jonas started to see colour but still didn't know how it happened for the giver 

the giver didn't have the seeing beyond he had the hearing beyond he could hear music

the giver wanted to keep it for himself

jonas made the giver keep the memory 

the giver transferred every memory of courage and strength that he could to jonas 

jonas needed to find the elsewhere that he knew existed

in the middle of the night before the ceremony jonas would sneak out of his house 

jonas would put his bike in the bushes along with a folded pair of clothes then he would go to the annex and see the giver

when his parents wake up they would find a note saying that jonas was out for an early bike ride 

his parents would be a little annoyed but not worried enough to go looking for him 

they would't know that he wasn't there at the ceremony because they would assume he was with asher or the giver

in the morning the giver would order a vehicle and driver from the speaker 

the giver would hide jonas in the storage compartment along with some food 

jonas and the giver would begin their ride in the vehicle 

searchers would be sent out miday but they would find his clothes and bike 

the giver would come back to the community 

and he would tell the community he was lost in the river and do the ceremony of loss 

jonas understood that the community needed him but he begged the giver to go with him 

the giver told jonas he loved him 

the giver said he wanted to be with his daughter

the most dangerous things were the planes  

he was getting stronger and rested less 

when the planes came he was very scared and wished he had received more memories of courage from the giver 

the planes used heat censor so gabe and jonas concentrated on memories of snow and coldness 

the memories became less vibrant and more dull which is what the giver hoped would happen as he went further from the community shedding memories

jonas tried to fish and he used gabes blanket as a net 

together they ate raw fish and some berries 

jonas tried to remember big celebrations and banquets so that he wouldn't feel so hungry but as soon as the memory left he was starving again 

jonas remembered getting chastised for using the word starving when he was younger 

he was starving now for real 

if jonas had stayed in the community he felt he would have starved in other ways 

he would have been starving for feelings colour and love 

gabe would have been dead if jonas never left with him 

jonas was wearing from lack of food

the were hills

his ankle throbbed 

it started to rain and gabe and jonas were cold and wet 

gabe and jonas cried because they were cold tired weak hungry scared but jonas also cried because he was scared he would not be able to save gabe

jonas struggles to get down the hills while staying consciousn but he knows that elsewhere is at the bottom of the hill 

as jonas is going down the hill he sees colour he knows he’s going to a place of love 

for a minute jonas heard an echo but maybe it was only an echo

jonas was finally able to quiet himself after crying for a while 

jonas mimicked the speaker and was acting out of anger

jonas asked the giver if he ever lied to him and the giver says he has the power to but doesn't 

release is the same for everyone

feelings aren't part of anyones life so they are all ok with what happens during release 

the giver says he wants to make a plan and jonas is confused

the giver explains to jonas how they know that people used to feel pride sorrow love and pain

the giver realizes that things need to change and jonas brought it to his attention 

if they failed at their planned jonas would most likely be killed but he didn't think his life was worth living if the truth wasn't out so he said yes to the plan 

if jonas escapes he can't go back the community will get the memories 

the giver is staying to help the community 

the giver doesn't see colours anymore 

jonas asked the giver how the begging was different for him jonas started to see colour but still didn't know how it happened for the giver 

the giver didn't have the seeing beyond he had the hearing beyond he could hear music

the giver wanted to keep it for himself

jonas made the giver keep the memory 

the giver transferred every memory of courage and strength that he could to jonas 

jonas needed to find the elsewhere that he knew existed

in the middle of the night before the ceremony jonas would sneak out of his house 

jonas would put his bike in the bushes along with a folded pair of clothes then he would go to the annex and see the giver

when his parents wake up they would find a note saying that jonas was out for an early bike ride 

his parents would be a little annoyed but not worried enough to go looking for him 

they would't know that he wasn't there at the ceremony because they would assume he was with asher or the giver

in the morning the giver would order a vehicle and driver from the speaker 

the giver would hide jonas in the storage compartment along with some food 

jonas and the giver would begin their ride in the vehicle 

searchers would be sent out miday but they would find his clothes and bike 

the giver would come back to the community 

and he would tell the community he was lost in the river and do the ceremony of loss 

jonas understood that the community needed him but he begged the giver to go with him 

the giver told jonas he loved him 

the giver said he wanted to be with his daughter
