Nelson Mandela was a successful leader as he understood change was not immediate and took time. In the 1992 Olympics he supported the athletics even though "Of the 95-person delegation, only eight were black". Nelson Mandela said ""I would have liked [the team] to be a reflection of our population, but there has to be a starting point". He understood that it was not going to be immediate, he was in it for the long run hoping that eventually there would be an equal distribution between the races. Not looking for immediate drastic changes made people want to work with him as it allowed compromise, one of the many skills that made him a great leader.
