Darry's Personality: Weaknesses / Flaws

Darry's Weaknesses include:
- Being worried about his Social Status: This fits Darry because he is a greaser in a neighborhood where Socs jump greasers. However, in the book, he doesn't really seem to care about this feature of his personality.
- Somewhat Selfless- Darry's selflessness is a great strength of his personality, However this can also be a weakness of his personality because he watches out for his brothers no matter what happens to him. "Sure little buddy, we're not going to fight no more" (176). That shows that he does watch out for his brothers even if it means possible getting jumped.

Conclusion of The Personality Quiz

We believe this personality quiz almost perfectly fits Darry because of what it said under the Friendships tab, specifically "Consul's have a tendency to believe that their friends can do no wrong, always stepping up to defend them regardless of circumstances".“Suddenly I realized, horrified that Darry crying. He didn’t even make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks. ” (98). He said that because of him seeing Ponyboy in the hospital. That is what we think Darry's Personality is.

Darry's main desire is to keep his brothers safe and his family together. After his parents died, he became pretty much a whole different person and fought to keep his brothers safe. This is shown when the book says " 'I don't know if you ought to be in this rumble, Pony,' Darry said slowly" (133). He also tried to make sure Ponyboy did well in school so he could go to college, because neither Darry nor Sodapop had that opportunity.

- Ponyboy is The Reluctant Hero because throughout the book he doesn't think of himself as a hero, just as a greaser, but he ends up saving the children from the church fire anyway.
- Darry is The Guardian because he tries to keep his family safe throughout the whole book. This is shown when he tells Ponyboy "'I don't know if you ought to be in this rumble, Pony,' Darry said slowly" (133). He is concerned for Ponyboy's safety in this section of the book.
- Dally is The Tragic Hero because after Johnny's death, he kind of breaks down, goes and robs a grocery store, and gets shot by the police.
- Johnny is The Victim because he has had a traumatic experience with Bob which kind of broke him down. This experience really screwed him up even though Bob got the worst of it. Then he makes a kind of a comeback when he helped save the kids but then died as a consequence.
- Two-Bit is The Trickster because throughout the book he's described as funny and witty which probably got him into trouble.
- Cherry is The Peacemaker because she doesn't support the fight between the Socs and the Greasers and tries to encourage Ponyboy not to fight.

Darry's motivation is the fact that his parents died. This causes him to protect his brothers throughout the book. This is his motivation because he doesn't want to lose any more members of his family, which fuels his desire. This is shown when Ponyboy says "'He didn't use to be like that... we used to get along okay... before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can't stand me'" (51). (Ponyboy is talking to Johnny about when Darry hit him). Darry hit him because Ponyboy could've died when he stayed up until 2 a.m. in the lot.

Literary Terms Setting and Conflict

Conflict: The conflict in The Outsiders is the rivalry between the Socs and Greasers. It id used to further develop the story line (obviously) and to develop characters like Johnny and Ponyboy. Why they use this conflict is to explain what hardships kids can face that some adults might not even know about. It is also meant to show that being in different social classes can get into people's heads and cause them to not like each other. A quote that supports this claim is "I went on walking home, thinking about the movie, and then suddenly wishing I had some company. Greasers can't walk alone too much or they'll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream 'Greaser!'" (2). This shows the deep hatred the two groups have for each other.

Setting: The Setting in this story is integral. This is because if it happened in a city like New York, it would be much more violent, and it probably would not between Socs and Greasers but between gangs. Living in Tulsa, Oklahoma makes it much more calm, or at least as calm as it can be. The setting is used to explain why the adults in the neighborhood might not be knowing why its happening, because to them, it seems like a normal town. This is shown when the book says "... dress in blue jeans and T-shirts, or leave our shirttails out and wear leather jackets and tennis shoes or boots" (3). This shows that they are in a normal town but might be a little bit poorer then some

Darry is a storm cellar.
Darry is a storm cellar because in the book it says Darry protects his brothers. Another way Darry is a storm cellar is that Darry is like the backbone that his brothers count on, just like how people count on a storm cellar during a storm. This is shown when he said " 'Sure little buddy, we're not going to fight no more'" (176). In this quote from Darry, he has a protective tone talking to his brothers.
