Surah Ar-Rahman (The Beneficent) is the 55th chapter of the Qur’an, and it contains 78 verses. It is a Meccan surah and is often referred to as a beautiful reminder of God’s infinite mercy, bounty, and the many blessings He has provided to humanity and all of creation. The surah is distinctive in the way it repeatedly asks the rhetorical question: “Which, then, of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?”

Key Themes of Surah Ar-Rahman:

The Mercy of Allah: The surah begins with the phrase “Ar-Rahman,” emphasizing Allah’s supreme attribute as “The Most Merciful.” His mercy is the foundation of all the blessings bestowed upon creation. The mention of His mercy and the repeating of this name throughout the surah emphasizes Allah’s nature as merciful and compassionate.

Creation and Bounty: The surah mentions various aspects of creation—such as the heavens, the earth, the mountains, rivers, and fruits—pointing to the beauty and precision of the natural world. It emphasizes that all of these are gifts from Allah to humanity, and they are signs of His greatness. The balance and harmony in the world are a clear indication of His careful design.

The Day of Judgement: There is a recurring theme in Surah Ar-Rahman of the afterlife, particularly the Day of Judgement. It describes the scenes of both paradise and hell, offering a vision of what is to come based on one’s deeds in this life. The surah reassures the righteous with the rewards of Jannah and warns the wrongdoers of the consequences of their actions.

Balance in Creation: One of the recurring themes in this surah is the balance of the universe. Allah has set everything in perfect measure and proportion, from the sun and the moon to the plants and animals. This balance signifies His control and the harmony that exists in the natural world.

The Question of Denial: The repeated refrain, “Which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?” invites reflection and gratitude. It serves as both a reminder and a warning. The surah asks people to acknowledge and appreciate the many blessings they have received from Allah, and it calls upon them to remember that these blessings should not be taken for granted.

Lessons from Surah Ar-Rahman:

Gratitude: The surah teaches us to be grateful for all the blessings that we enjoy in life, including those that are often overlooked. Every aspect of our existence, from our very breath to the provision of sustenance, is a blessing from Allah.

Acknowledging Divine Mercy: Allah’s mercy is all-encompassing, and we should seek to align ourselves with this mercy by being merciful toward others and living lives that reflect His mercy.

Reflection on Creation: Contemplating the natural world and its perfect design encourages us to reflect on the power of the Creator and increases our faith in Allah.

Awareness of the Hereafter: The surah reminds us of the reality of the afterlife, where the righteous will be rewarded with eternal paradise, and the wrongdoers will face the consequences of their actions. This serves as a call to strive for righteousness and to be mindful of our deeds.

Tadabbur ayah 10 to 19

10. He created the heavens without any pillars that you can see, and placed on the earth firm mountains, lest it should shake with you, and He dispersed therein every kind of moving creature. And We sent down rain from the sky and caused every kind of noble plant to grow therein.

11. This is the creation of Allah. So show Me what those, whom you worship, other than Him, have created. Nay, the wrongdoers are in manifest error.

12. And We certainly gave Luqman wisdom, saying: “Give thanks to Allah. And whoever gives thanks, gives thanks for the benefit of his own soul; and whoever is ungrateful, then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”

13. And (remember) when Luqman said to his son, while he was advising him, “O my son, do not associate with Allah. Indeed, association with Him is a great injustice.”

14. And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.

15. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

16. O my son, indeed, if a deed is the weight of a mustard seed and is within a rock or anywhere in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.

17. O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.

18. And do not turn your cheek in contempt toward people, and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

19. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice. Indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.

Usrah is an Arabic term that translates to “family” in English, but in the context of Islamic practice, it refers to a small, close-knit group of people who come together regularly to discuss Islamic teachings, strengthen their faith, and support one another. Usrah groups often serve as a platform for learning, sharing experiences, and engaging in personal development through Islamic principles.

In Islamic communities, Usrah is typically led by a more knowledgeable individual (often called a “mentor” or “leader”) who guides the group in discussions about the Quran, Hadith, and Islamic values. The objective is to create a supportive environment where individuals can grow spiritually and emotionally. Usrah can also serve as a way to promote social connections and unity within the Muslim community.

This hadith emphasizes the concept of Ihsan, which means doing things in the best and most excellent manner, not just in worship, but in every aspect of life — even in matters like killing or slaughtering (e.g., for food or in justice). Key points:

Ihsan is a universal principle: It applies to all actions — worship, behavior, treatment of animals, interactions with others.

Mercy and compassion: Even in acts that might involve harm (e.g. slaughter), Islam commands mercy and minimizing suffering.

Sharpen the blade: This is a metaphor not only for technical preparation but also for mindfulness and responsibility in actions.

Solat is is the Islamic ritual prayer and one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is an act of worship that connects Muslims to Allah through recitation, physical movements, and supplication. Solat is obligatory upon every sane, adult Muslim and must be performed five times daily.

There are 13 pillars of solat:

Standing

Takbiratul Ihram

Reciting Surah al-Fatihah

Rukuk

Tuma’ninah

I’tidal

Remaining still in I’tidal

Sujud

Remaining still in Sujud

Sitting between the two Sujud

Remaining still in Sujud

Takhiyat Akbar

Taslim (Salutation)

For our group in Role Play, we chose the topic Pillar of Solat. We decided to make a story about two girls who accidentally leave out the pillars of prayer, and show the correct way to pray. In summary, what I understand from our role play is that, to ensure that the prayer is faultless and genuine, we must adhere to the pillars of prayer, which are standing, intention, takbiratul ihram, and reciting the surah Al-Fatiha. Without these pillars, the prayer is not valid. The prayer will be deemed incomplete and rejected by Allah if the pillars are disregarded.

In Usrah 1, we learned about Pillars of Iman. In Usrah 2, we learned about Pillars of Islam. Iman is about belief and Islam is about action. Islam shows faith through deeds, while Iman strengthens the heart with conviction. Both are inseparable because without Iman, acts of Islam are empty and without Islam, Iman is incomplete. Together, Iman and Islam build a complete Muslim personality. Pillars of Iman is the foundation of faith while pillars of Islam put faith into action. Both must unite for a Muslim to live in true submission to Allah.

Honestly, this class was a very slow and relax class I have attended. Sister Iman was a very simplistic yet still strict as our instructor. The knowledge she has given to us really suit with our understanding as so-called gen z. Never have I ever meet with this type of person as my instructor but it was very nice and interesting. This makes me want to be cool if I ever have a chance to be instructor, teacher, or lecturer in the future. In our last class, we had a very fun farewell party. And I noticed everyone have make their effort to attend the class with their own food and present. It was fun and I hope to feels and experience this kind of class again.

My feedback for Sister Iman as our instructor is nothing but respect. She still attend the class even though she finished her work and went straight to IIUM for the class. At first I thought she didn’t give much attention on the exchange gift, but actually it the most precious and perfect gift to student as maybe some other gifts didn’t cost RM5 at all. To Sister Iman, thank you for your effort, thank you for your coolness yet fierce ways, thank you for your understanding, and thank you for everything you have given to us. May Allah reward you with every single good thing for your blood, sweat, and tears in your lifetime. I also ask for forgiveness from the bottom of my heart if I have done any mistake in your class. I’m so sorry for my words in the last class as I just making jokes but it has been a bad jokes for you. I’m so sorry again for my mistakes. As someone who her love language is not a words of affirmation, I hope my feedback is useful enough to encourage you. Thank you again Sister Iman. Lots of love. <3
