Key Themes of Surah Ar-Rahman:

1. The surah asks people to acknowledge and appreciate the many blessings they have received from Allah, and it calls upon them to remember that these blessings should not be taken for granted.

Lessons from Surah Ar-Rahman:

1. Gratitude: The surah teaches us to be grateful for all the blessings that we enjoy in life, including those that are often overlooked. Every aspect of our existence, from our very breath to the provision of sustenance, is a blessing from Allah.

2. Acknowledging Divine Mercy: Allah’s mercy is all-encompassing, and we should seek to align ourselves with this mercy by being merciful toward others and living lives that reflect His mercy.

3. Reflection on Creation: Contemplating the natural world and its perfect design encourages us to reflect on the power of the Creator and increases our faith in Allah.

4. Awareness of the Hereafter: The surah reminds us of the reality of the afterlife, where the righteous will be rewarded with eternal paradise, and the wrongdoers will face the consequences of their actions. This serves as a call to strive for righteousness and to be mindful of our deeds.

11. This is the creation of Allah. So show Me what those, whom you worship, other than Him, have created. Nay, the wrongdoers are in manifest error.

12. And We certainly gave Luqman wisdom, saying: “Give thanks to Allah. And whoever gives thanks, gives thanks for the benefit of his own soul; and whoever is ungrateful, then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”

13. And (remember) when Luqman said to his son, while he was advising him, “O my son, do not associate with Allah. Indeed, association with Him is a great injustice.”

14. And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.

15. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

16. O my son, indeed, if a deed is the weight of a mustard seed and is within a rock or anywhere in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.

17. O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.

18. And do not turn your cheek in contempt toward people, and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

19. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice. Indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.

1. Syirik istiqlal : Menetapkan adanya dua tuhan atau lebih yang berlainan seperti akidah Majusi yang mempercayai adanya Ahura Mazda dan Angra Mainyu.

2. Syirik tab’id : Menyatukan tuhan daripada beberapa oknum seperti akidah Triniti agama Kristian.

3. Syirik taqrib : Beribadah kepada sesuatu selain daripada Allah SWT dengan tujuan untuk mendekatkan diri kepada Allah SWT.

4. Syirik taqlid : Beribadah kepada Allah kerana mengikut orang lain.

5. Syirik asbab : Menyandarkan satu kesan terhadap sebab tertentu yang bersifat adat seperti berpegang bahawa manusia kenyang kerana makan, dan bukan Allah SWT yang mengenyangkannya.

6. Syirik aghrad : Beramal kerana selain daripada Allah SWT.

One day, while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), a man appeared before us wearing extremely white clothes and very black hair. He sat down next to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and placed his knees against his and placed his hands on his thighs. He asked, “O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied,

“Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the Zakat, to fast during Ramadan, and to perform Hajj if you are able to do so.”

The man then asked, “Tell me about Iman (faith).”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied,

“Iman is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in Qadar (divine decree), both its good and its evil.”

The man then asked, “Tell me about Ihsan.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied,

“Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.”

The man then asked, “When will the Hour (the Day of Judgment) be?”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied,

“The one being asked about it knows no better than the one asking.”

The man then went away. After a while, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked,

“Umar, do you know who that was?”

Umar replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

“That was Jibril, who came to teach you your religion.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 8)

Islam (Submission):

Islam refers to the outward practice of the religion, which involves submission to the will of Allah (God) by following the Five Pillars of Islam.

These are:

• Shahada: The declaration of faith, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.”

• Salat: The five daily prayers.

• Zakat: The giving of charity to those in need.

• Sawm: Fasting during the month of Ramadan.

• Hajj: The pilgrimage to Mecca, which is obligatory for those who are able.

Iman (Faith):

Iman is the internal belief in the six articles of faith, which are:

• Belief in Allah (God).

• Belief in the Angels.

• Belief in the Books sent by Allah, including the Qur’an.

• Belief in the Prophets sent to guide humanity.

• Belief in the Day of Judgment.

• Belief in Qadar (divine preordainment).

Iman refers to what one believes in the heart and professes with the tongue. It is the foundation of a Muslim’s spiritual life and the driving force behind their actions.

Ihsan (Arabic: إحسان) is an Islamic concept that means “perfection” or “excellence” in faith and actions. It represents the highest level of faith in Islam, going beyond the basic obligations.

In Islam, the concept of “the hour” refers to the Day of Judgment, a future event when all humans will be resurrected and judged by God (Allah) for their deeds. It is called “Yawm al-Qiyamah” in Arabic, meaning “The Day of Resurrection” or “The Day of Judgment.”

Opinions of the scholars on the age of Prophet Nuh AS

Among the scholars’ opinions regarding the age of Prophet Nuh AS are:

First Opinion: The opinion of Qatadah RA is that the age of Prophet Nuh AS was 950 years.

Second Opinion: The opinion of Ibn Abbas RA is that Prophet Nuh AS lived for 1050 years. Allah SWT sent Prophet Nuh AS to his people when he was 40 years old, and he preached to them for 950 years. Additionally, he lived for another 60 years after the flood, when the population began to grow and spread.

Third Opinion: Ka’ab bin Ahbar RA said that Prophet Nuh AS preached to his people for 950 years and lived for another 70 years after that.

Fourth Opinion: According to Ikrimah RA, the age of Prophet Nuh AS before and after being sent to his people was 1700 years.

Fifth Opinion: Wahab bin Munabbih stated that the age of Prophet Nuh AS was 1400 years.

Sixth Opinion: The opinion of ‘Aun bin Abi Syaddad RA is that the age of Prophet Nuh AS was 1650 years. Allah SWT sent Prophet Nuh AS to his people at the age of 350, and he preached to them for 950 years. Additionally, he lived for another 350 years after that.

Qadar: Something that has been set at a certain amount since the beginning of the time , so that it follows His knowledge which precedes everything.

Hikmah:

• Tawakkal and ikhlas

• Be mindful of your speech — both online and offline.

• Don’t spread unverified news.

• Avoid racism, pride, and superiority complexes.

• Resolve conflicts peacefully.

• Remember: Allah values taqwa, not appearances or titles.

• Ihsan is a universal principle: It applies to all actions — worship, behavior, treatment of animals, interactions with others.

• Mercy and compassion: Even in acts that might involve harm (e.g. slaughter), Islam commands mercy and minimizing suffering.

• Sharpen the blade: This is a metaphor not only for technical preparation but also for mindfulness and responsibility in actions.

In Australia, around half a million chickens are slaughtered every day. That is a huge job for the chicken industry. So they have developed sophisticated machinery designed to do one thing which is to kill thousands and thousands of animals.

Adab (Etiquette) Towards Neighbours in Islam

1. Kindness and Good Treatment

• Qur’an (An-Nisa 4:36):

“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away…”

Islam commands kindness to both close and distant neighbours.

2. Avoid Harm (No disturbance or nuisance)

• Hadith:

“By Allah, he is not a believer… whose neighbour is not safe from his harm.” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

Harming a neighbour (physically, verbally, or emotionally) is a serious sin in Islam.

3. Share Food and Gifts

• Hadith:

“O Abu Dharr! If you cook a stew, add extra water and offer some to your neighbours.” (Sahih Muslim)

Sharing meals and gifts strengthens neighbourly ties and shows generosity.

4. Help in Times of Need

• Support your neighbours in hardship — financially, emotionally, or physically. This builds community resilience and mutual respect.

• Do not spy, gossip, or intrude into neighbours’ affairs. Respect their space and family life.

For our group in Role Play, we chose the topic Pillar of Solat. We decided to make a story about two girls who accidentally leave out the pillars of prayer, and show the correct way to pray. In summary, what I understand from our role play is that, to ensure that the prayer is faultless and genuine, we must adhere to the pillars of prayer, which are standing, intention, takbiratul ihram, and reciting the surah Al-Fatiha. Without these pillars, the prayer is not valid. The prayer will be deemed incomplete and rejected by Allah if the pillars are disregarded.
