Unfortunately, we have only few scientists women in STEM. One of these great women is definitely Prof. dr. Birutė Galdikas - scientist, conservationist, educator: for over four decades Dr. Birutė Mary Galdikas has studied and worked closely with the orangutans of Indonesian Borneo in their natural habitat, and is today the world’s foremost authority on the orangutan. It would be nice to have this woman in my lessons. We can do a video conference and let her talk about her profession, encourage girls to major in science. Showing a scientist from a different side, as a practical example, would encourage the girls to take up a STEM career.

Not famous but successful ones. For example, I would arrange a visit to the Advanced Computer Graphics Group at University of Zaragoza, where Diego Gutierrez works as a teacher. He is also considered one of the world experts in virtual reality. He has given advice to Disney, worked in projects with the MIT and the NASA. Echegaray also entered politics in later life. He enjoyed an illustrious career in the government sector, being appointed Minister of Public Works and Finance Minister successively.

I work in a Lower Secondary school, students are aged 11-14. I would tell them about Fabiola Gianotti, an Italian physicist. Dr Gianluca Bezzina. He is Malta's singing doctor who won the Eurovision song contest a couple of years ago. We invited him to our school as a learning ambassador. I teach in primary school. This year I've created for our students project SKY IS THE LIMIT. Among lots of activities I invited two young engineers - members of SPACE IS MORE group - Leszek Orzechowski and Szymon Gryś. In my country I have in mind a couple of STEM role models.
The first one: Silvia Torres Castilleja, an astronomer that is the current president of the executive committee of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). She is considered the first woman to obtain a PhD degree in Astronomy here in Mexico. She studies the interstellar matter.

I am not a teacher, but an science activist and I work with schools to integrate science activities at their classrooms. One of the most effective strategies, for models introduction at the school, is the exposition done by the own children's familiars, as parents, uncles, grandparents, cousins, or friends that are working in a scientific field. They are close people, with a normal life, and the kids can visualize the reality of their science work in a familiar and factible way for them in the future. There are many, many anonymous persons that could be mentioned and that are working very hard daily in the science field in Spain. And for me there is never 1 person, but a team. Even the person that works hours as lab's auxiliar, completly engaged with the team's investigation, can be identified as a national STEM role model to discuss with students about STEM careers

There are many role model scientists who will be the example of STEM in my country. But I would like to introduce Mustafa TONGEMEN as my role model as my mathematics teacher. "200 Year Old Math Problem Solved" by him that "a math problem brought forward by the Italian mathematician, Malfatti, in 1803," after working on the problem two hours a day for seven years. The person I would like to use is Dame Kay Davies who is a British geneticist and Professor of anatomy at Oxford University. Kay started her education at a high school for girls in Stourbridge which is in the heart of the 'black country'. I can think of several role models in many areas, but I think Mariano Gago is one I use a lot to show though that people that are important in STEM areas many times have there contribution to change society and politics. Mariano Gago was a Particle Physics researcher at CERN and also Cathedratic Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. Besides his notorious work as researcher he was also responsble for JNICT and later on Minister of Science and Technology during several years and was the responsible of the inclusion of Portugal in all major European STEM consortiums namely CERN, in 1986, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), in 1997, to European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), in 1998, to the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in Junho of 2000 and to the European Space Agency (ESA), in november of 2000. Throughout the scholastic year, we do bring various professionals to talk to our pupils and expose them to STEM careers thus I managed to meet a number of role models. By far, my first choice and preferred STEM role model locally would be Professor Josette Camilleri. She is a dental surgeon with a difference. I find that her career journey is very inspiring to our pupils. She started off as a Dental surgeon and specialized on root filling treatments which saw her move away from the medical sciences towards the material sciences. She became a lecturer in Materials Science, Department of Civil and Structural Engineering and Deputy Director of Civil Engineering laboratories within the Faculty for the Built Environment at the University of Malta. I think Pedro Duque could be taken as a good role model in Spain, especially because how extraordinarily difficult it is to suceed in the área of Space and becoming a part of the NASA team. Here in Spain, we have one great role model that is Pedro Duque. He was the first Spanish who went to the space. I think he could be a suitable person to tell our students how to get to work in the Eurpean Space Agency.
However, and despite this first example, I think that any person of a scientific career could come to school and present his or her job career to students and families; the speaker should deal with:
1. Daily life as a scientist. What does s/he do everyday? income?
2. The academic path he or she has followed.
3. How he or she has ended in his or her actual job.
After the presentation, the school should:
4. Make our students read about scientific degrees, careers and make them think about questions that they can ask to the person who is giving the conference.
5. Make our students reflect by having group conversations and individual chats about their real possiblities to develop a STEM career.
6. Have a dossier with the academic progession of the student, talk individually with the student to make him aware of what he is good at.

My idea is make “Answers to questions”. First I tried to get in touch with the president of Proespaço to know what his availability would be for a short video conference with our school. Then asked the students to write in small groups the questions they would like to put to the Dr. António Neto da Silva. Each class at the end would just have to select the top 5 questions and their spokespeople.

Even though you can try and reach an acknowledged person who works in STEM, I think the most fruitful role model you can use with students is someone they can feel identified with.
Once you've been some time in a school you know of former students who have pursued STEM careers. Their experience should be really important to kids.

The italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti could be a good role model: in 2014 and 2015 she spent 199 days aboard the International Space Station, where she performed a variety of scientific experiments and studied generations of fruit flies to chart gene changes in relation to disease.

I’ve chosen Gema Climent a Valencian woman who founded Nesplora, a company that applies virtual reality to the treatment of neurological disorders.

to my humble opinion the main aim is to guide our students optimally, I mean, instead of doing perfect people we should do real people. You can find out information about STEM career in many webs. I integrate Gema Climent or another scientist in class putting on examples about her career and remembering that it’s a piece of cake making a good education if you have good resources. Finally it’s quite important to highlight that scientists are real people and is widely available for every one.

There are conferences and meetings in most of high schools, and others have the figure of councellor for people to ask for his doubts about careers. Unafortunately, we dont have this person in conservatories, and this figure should exist, because not most of our pupils go to superior musical education, and there are lots of conections between music and STEM careers, or other careers

A STEM role model of my country is Dumitru Prunariu. He is the first Romanian cosmonaut. On May 14, 1981, be first and only Romanian to fly in space. He participed in the Soiuz 40 mission of the space program ,,Intercosmos" and spent 7 days, 20 hours and 42 minutes in space. He is an aeronautical engineer.
He is a famous spaceman and he could reper him experience comunicating him passion for space science but also describing all chalenger that he had to overcome.

I think Aziz Sancar is the STEM role model of our country. He is Turkish biochemist who discovered a cellular process known as nucleotide excision repair, whereby cells correct errors in DNA that arise as a result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light or certain mutation-inducing chemicals. My students are very impressed by Samantha Cristoforetti. She is the most famous Italian astronaut and she's a pilot and engineer. She holds the record for longest space flight by a woman and she is also the first Italian woman in space. She's perfect to fit in a lesson about STEM career: she's a determined woman and she studied very hard all across Europe until she was officially selected as an astronaut in 2009 by the European Space Agency. She's a very good scientist but she's also a very nice woman: she posted many photos of planet Earth on Twitter and many funny photos! She's a perfect inspiration for young girls!

However, I think a role model related with new technologies will be the best option for my country. I will integrate this person in a lesson organising an skype talk with him or her. Astrobiology is an example of a STEM subject: there are inherently many disciplines involved in its development. We encourage students to investigate in Astrobiology: planets, habitability conditions, space exploration, involved institutions, robotics, etc. We always try to visit the Astrobiology Center, see and talk to researchers.
