This stage it is important for a child to feel safe , cared for, and protected. It sets the tone for a child's life. At this stage children are dependent on parents for everything, If they do not get the things they need, food, comfort, and love, The child will not grow to trust adults in their life. If trust predominates, as it should, children develop hope: the belief they can fulfill their needs and obtain their desires.

Potty training is a huge step in this process. it helps children begin to have a sense of control over their bodies. If shamed over accidents at this stage it can leave a child feeling shame and doubt and not gaining this skill. As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent.
