The video is an excellent way to show that no families are alike. There is no right or wrong. They are different in many ways and what they all have in common is that they all love, respect, and take care of each other. The video shows students that it is okay to have different families because it is what makes them special and unique.

These readings have given more awareness on families. All through my elementary years, I remember making Mother's Day and Father's Day gifts as a class and not once did I ever see a teacher accommodate a student on those holidays. It never crossed my mind that students may have issues with certain topics. After reading these articles, it made me more aware and sensitive toward family situations and how I should think about approaching these topics. This a topic that should not be forced onto the students, they should be given the option to share anything about their families if they want to. I can relate from the students' point of view because I almost did not post a photo of my family because one, I do not have anything recent, and two, my dad is no longer with us. I chose an old photo from a year before his passing. I chose it because this is my family that I love even if one is no longer here.

We Adopted You, Benjamin Koo by Linda Walvoord Girard

The author of the book portrays an adopted family. Benjamin doesn't know his own real birthday or birth mother because he was left on the doorstep of an orphanage in Korea. A few years after his own adoption, his parents adopted a 3 year old girl from Brazil. Benjamin does struggle when he realizes that he does not look the same as his parents. He also struggles with bullying because he's different but he did not let that bother him. My favorite part of the book is when his parents celebrate Korean New Year for him and Carnival for his sister by dressing up, dancing, and eating the cultural food. The message the author was trying to communicate is that looks do not matter when it comes to family. "You might have been born somewhere else or look different from your parents, but that has nothing to do with love." Yes this is a book I would add to my classroom library because of the message. Adopted or biological, families do not have to look the same because all that matters is the love they have for each other.
