My parents are open to me choosing my own career but recommend their career of a software engineer. I feel that the pressure parents put on their children is necessary for the child’s development. This may not be the case for the small percentage of children that are already very mature and don’t need too much guidance. Parental pressure teaches the kids what is wrong and what is right. Parental pressure also assures that the child is succeeding in school and gives the kid a motivation to make his or her parents’ proud. Pressure from parents also creates certain consequences if a requirement is not met. This teaches children logical thinking and prepares them to make better choices. Parental pressure may not be a favorite of a child but it is essential in a child’s early life.

Conforming to society is a big part of today’s world. People who don’t conform to society usually get prosecuted or get worshipped and create a revolution. Conforming to society is usually looked down upon because the large majority of society has a unity that looks down upon smaller minority groups that don’t have the same ideologies. Not conforming to society leads to many conflicts such as major revolutions or uprisings. It theoretically is very easy to not conform to society but in reality is a very hard thing to do. Being a nonconformist just requires not sticking to the general views of majority of the people; however, it requires a lot of courage for someone to do it. Once someone is identified as a nonconformist they will immediately be oppressed by society and most of the time get crushed. Nonconformity is a very important part of society and even though it is looked down upon creates changes that can be good in today’s world.

“All one can really leave one’s children is what’s inside their heads. Education, in other words, and not earthly possessions, is the ultimate legacy, the only thing that cannot be taken away” is an epigraph by Dr. Wernher von Braun at the beginning of Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam Jr. This quote explains the importance of education in someone’s life. It hints that Homer’s education will be the main reason that homer succeeds in building rockets. Von Braun makes a good point that no matter what happens education will remain in a person. This allows the assumption that Homer’s education is a valuable part of his career.

Miss Frieda Joy Riley explains that “All I’ve done is give you a book. You have to have the courage to learn what’s inside it.” This quote shows Homer’s ambition to read and demonstrates how the urge to read leads to success. Similar the the quote by Dr. Wernher von Braun this quote highlights the importance of education in Homer’s career. Riley’s quote hints that Homer’s urge to read allows him to eventually succeed and suggests a theme of education and knowledge.

“From the first day I could remember being alive, he and I have brawled”(Hickam Jr., 18) is what Sonny says about the relationship with his brother, Jim. This unhealthy relationship stems from the expectations of Sonny’s father and the rest of Coalwood’s population. In Coalwood most boys had to work in the mine or play football. Sonny couldn’t do either of them because he wasn’t strong enough so his dad favored Jim. This lead to an unhealthy relationship between Sonny and his family. A healthy family relationship according to Sonny would include a positive atmosphere where one person isn’t favored while another is constantly brought down. Sonny would probably call his current family relationship unhealthy. An example of the unhealthy atmosphere is when Sonny thinks, “I was the only one who’d been yelled at”(Hickam Jr., 98). When the kids launch the rockets into the mine Sonny’s dad was furious about rocket building and yelled at Sonny. This discouragement is horrible when it comes to family relationship. Sonny’s dad should be helping Sonny and encouraging him when it comes to Sonny’s dreams. Overall Sonny’s family is in disarray because of the discouragement from Sonny’s dad and how Homer Hickam Sr. discriminates between his kids.
