MUSIC

The popular music of Kiribati is generally based on singing or other forms of vocalization, accompanied by body percussion. Public performances in present-day Kiribati are usually presented by a seated choir, accompanied by a guitar. However, during formal performances of the standing dance (Te Kaimatoa) or the hip dance (Te Buki) a wooden box is used as a percussion instrument. This box is built to give an egg tone and a reverberated tone when it is struck simultaneously by a chorus of men sitting around it. Traditional songs are often with themes of love, but there are also competitive, religious, children's, patriotic, war and wedding songs. There are also palo dances (which are accompanied by legends and semi-historical stories). These stick dances are only presented at main parties.

DANCE
The Frigate Bird, on the Kiribati flag, refers to this type of bird like that of the Kiribati dance. Most dances are in the standing or sitting position with limited movements and wobbles. Smiling while dancing is seen in modern Hawaiian Hula as vulgar in the context of Kiribati dance. This is due to its origin not only as a form of entertainment but as a form of account narration and a show of skill, beauty and resistance in the dancer.

SOCIAL PROBLEMS
Drinking alcohol is part of the culture and toddy, to locally made fermented coconut juice, is widespread. Alcoholism is a common problem, especially on the main island of Tarawa. Domestic violence is also common.
