Diane August was one of the researchers involved in the multi-year program of research which was designed to develop language and literacy skills while building grade level skills across content areas. Below is a graphic of the the structure of the research.

Research Years 1-4:
Researches spent the first four years of the study developing individual interventions inside the classroom in middle grades in collaboration with teachers. They focused on content areas such as social studies, English language arts, and science.

Research Years 5-6:
Next the researchers studied the individual projects and their integration into a two-year school-wide intervention. SIOP professional development were provided to social studies, English Language arts, and science teachers.

"If I were developing a program, I would have the ESL teacher work very collaboratively with the mainstream teacher to make sure ELs access grade level appropriate content and I would also put these kids through a fairly structured English as a foreign language, or in their case English as a second language course that focuses on form and meaning concurrently."
