Do you think education as an institution is meeting the needs of children and adolescents? Why do you believe as you do?

No. I think education hasn't changed that much over the last century. As an institution, we are not meeting the needs of the whole child. We need to focus on developing well-rounded individuals that are prepared to succeed in life (not just on their reading and math scores). As an institution, the primary responsibility has fallen on the individual teacher. Individual teachers are making amazing learning happen in their classrooms, but as an institution we need more resources, more funding, higher salaries, and decreased standardized testing.

If you could have a magic wand and change anything about your profession, what would you change and why?

Salary: Even with a Masters degree, teachers in their first five years of teaching don't make enough money to meet basic needs and properly support their families (especially in California). Increased salaries would make the profession more competitive, and would provide numerous benefits to include teacher recruitment and retainment, increased student performance, increased teacher performance, reduced need for a second job, decrease burnout, and many more benefits.

Do away with standardized testing: I believe it's not a fair or accurate measure of efficacy. The pressure on schools and teachers to produce high test scores leads to a teach-to-the-test approach. It says nothing about the quality of teaching and learning occurring in the room that year. Some of the benefits students learn from one year, may not be seen until following years, and therefore is not an accurate reflection of knowledge. Some types of learning simply can't be measured from a standardized test.

My number one hope for my future is that I will be happy in my life and in my career. I hope to keep God close to my heart and live my life with purpose. I hope to adopt lots of children and share my love for God, family, and adventure. In my professional career, I dream that all of my student's will realize their full individual potential, and use that knowledge to achieve their goals. I dream that there will be a day when students love coming to school, and where the whole child is guided and supported to actualize their dreams. I dream of a society that values individualized education and puts our schools, students, and teachers at the forefront. After my teaching career, I hope to retire on a farm and run my own animal rescue, employing students with special needs.

Career reflection: Looking back at my career as a teacher, I would not think about how great my class did on their summative and standardized assessments. I would remember all the little moments with my students. Their excitement to learn, their "aha" moments, and our laughter together. I will remember the tears that I calmed and the hearts that I changed.

Personal life reflection: Looking at my life passions and accomplishments, I would feel proud. Most of my passions involve service to others in need. I would feel content that I lived a life God would be proud of, and I would feel at peace that I served my purpose here on earth.
