The Kwakiutl are a current group of Native Americans living in southern British Columbia. Well regarded for their mask utilization in various ceremonies throughout the year, they continue traditional ceremonies. It is believed that this mask would be used in a male coming of age ceremony taking place in the summer. The eagle may have served as the spirit guardian which sticks with the young boy from the beginning of puberty. The mask was made to show the inner reality of the boy and had string which would open and close as if a transformation were occurring.

This video is from a leader of the Kwakiutl tribe. He explains that the masks are more than just art. They are meant to represent the spirit world and things they ought to acknowledge the significance of in their culture. I choose this mechanism because it really explains why these pieces are created and how significant they are to the people who made them.

Native American's have a belief in Spirit Guides. They are assigned an animal at the start of puberty that represents attributes and traits they are perceived to possess. I chose this mechanism because I think having turning interactive portions would be interesting and it is cool to know what your spirit guide animal would be and thus what animal your mask would be.

Totem poles had different meanings to different groups. For some it showed their religious beliefs. For others it showed their tribes history and was passed from generation to generation. I chose the mechanism because it shows the impressive feats of architecture these artists were able to make and the common symbolic themes throughout their various mediums and pieces.
