1) NDT stand for non-destructive testing. It is a process to test the material characteristic or inspection of defects or discontinuities of an assemblies without destroying the material or assemblies. NDT, as the name suggested, does not destroy the material or assemblies used for testing. Hence, the material or assemblies can still be used for their intended purpose after testing. There are various NDT methods and they are named according to the type of penetrating medium or the equipment used to perform that particular test. Six most common NDT methods are Magnetic Particle Testing (MP), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Electromagnetic Testing (ET), and Visual Testing (VT).
2) NDT has been widely used in industry for the inspection of in-service product and manufacturing process. For inspection of in-service product, NDT can be used to ensure product integrity and reliability by inspecting the defects or discontinuities that present on the surface or sub-surface of the product. For manufacturing process, NDT can be used to ensure quality manufacturing process was carry out by inspecting the quality of materials and joining process used for the manufacturing process. For example, NDT can be used to determine the quality of weld by inspecting the microstructure or defects that present in the weld. The methods that can be used included Magnetic Particle Testing (MP), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT). NDT can also be used to detect the internal or external cracking of fuselage of airplane piping system.
