The idea that curiosity can lead to obsession is found within Victor's story by the way that natural philosophy ignited an interest in his life and as Matthew said, that curiosity caused him to begin to pursue that subject relentlessly, giving up other passions to follow his obsession. In addition, Victor tried to prevent Robert Walton from following in his own footsteps as present in the way that Victor said “Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow" (Shelley 31). Victor noticed a passion and ardent desire to have his voyage make himself "famous" and well-known among other people for new discoveries.

I think of irrationality is the inability to be able to see the other side of a situation and solely pursuing one's own desires in spite of adverse conditions that could be very plausible. For example, this showed up in The Things They Carried because of the way that Tim O'Brien began to become obsessed with getting revenge on Bobby Jorgenson. Tim's experience of nearly dying as a result of Bobby's actions caused him to become consumed with the idea of inflicting pain upon Bobby even though his friends who he had to leave a few months prior specifically told Tim to leave that idea of causing pain to Bobby. The desire and obsession to inflict pain upon Bobby shows up in the way that O'Brien said “I’d head down to the wire and stare out at the darkness, out where the war was, and think up ways to make Bobby Jorgenson feel exactly what I felt. I wanted to hurt him” (O’Brien 184). He put these words into action through the very intricate and multi-tiered plan that O'Brien fulfilled on the night that he tried to instill fear in Jorgenson's life.

Perceptions can be deeply rooted in certain experiences that happened in the past but continue to affect the future. Different experiences and situations cause people to act and think in different ways as a result of their different way of perceiving the world. This theme can be found in The Things They Carried with the difference between Tim O'Brien and his daughter, Kathleen. Although some may say that it is quite obvious that there would be a difference between Tim and his daughter as a result of the difference between ages, we never knew as an audience whether those situations truly happened, nor if O'Brien did have a daughter name Kathleen. If this is true, then it begins to highlight the reasoning behind why O'Brien may have incorporated Kathleen in the story. I think that it could partially be done to show momentous impact that war is capable of having upon people: O'Brien experienced war and Kathleen embodies innocence by the way that she is a child and has never been to war. Kathleen was also symbol in the book for those when never went to war. If this is the reason for incorporating Kathleen into the book, it demonstrates the difference in perceptions caused by experiences such as war: war is something that is nearly incomprehensible in the impact that it can have for those who never experienced it. This can be present in the interaction between Kathleen and O'Brien when Kathleen started off by saying “'Sometimes you’re pretty weird, aren’t you?
‘Well, no,’ I said.
‘You are too.’ She pulled her hand away and frowned at me. ‘Like coming over here. Some dumb thing happens a long time ago and you can’t ever forget it’” (O’Brien 175).

I think that the biggest influence on our perception of a given thing is when we first meet it. This is shown in our perceptions of the world in general in the formative years of a child's life; it is very hard to break away from a good or bad childhood, it's basically set in stone. Another example is first impressions. As silly as they are, they're very important because the first impression is your "formative years" for your perception of something.
