One can influence better, even without being the principal of the school.

It was this thought that gave rise to creating a program for the teachers for exercising leadership function.

Her program helps teachers to become Leaders. The teachers wanted it to be a fellowship so that they could interact with others.

Teacher exercises agency as teachers

Teachers and administrators can be fully involved, engaged in their role.

Dr. Betty used “Caring people, caring teachers” maxim

She enjoys creating space for people and making them shine.

According to her, people, (humans) interact with each other better. Give space for others to shine. Asking the right questions.

The best leaders are people who understood their own strengths. Capitalize on your strengths and have others around you whose strengths are complementing your strengths. The core of her leadership theory is “Be thyself”, “Capitalize on your strengths”.

On the matter of the use of different models off Professional development Dr. Betty says that she did not use one single mode or method. She based the model on the interest and need of people.

But she mentions two models particularly – Project Based Learning and

Social Emotional Learning

The criteria of selecting a model depends on the interest and need right now.

https://youtu.be/Fv9O6wyEJA4?t=1118

In the video, Dr. Betty- the first woman commissioner to serve for forty eight years, is inspiring us with her great dedication towards her work and showing us how to exercise leadership in any role we serve.

My Key Takeaways are:
1. Listen carefully
2. Interact with each other
3. Focus on problem
4. Take action
5. Caring is important
6. Know who you are and find your strength and weakness

Giving reflection on her video, she talks about leadership where we don't need any title of a leader to perform a task. We can serve from our existing positions too. Dr. Betty's work on helping teachers to perform as a leader by exercising leadership functions from class, has made me understand that we too need to focus on interactions among each other and take actions to solve problems to become a successful leader. She emphasizes that interactions should incorporate everyone’s needs and interests to find the solution at different levels.

The projects that she discusses are Project Based Learning and Socio Emotional Learning. She conducts assessments for children as well as for teachers and concludes that humans do better and interact better with each other in a caring environment. I particularly liked where she enlightens me on creating the setting and asking the right questions that allow us to pursue our passions. Understanding our strengths and weaknesses truly helps us deal with any circumstances we might face.

https://youtu.be/Fv9O6wyEJA4?t=987

Dr. Betty J Sternberg throws a light on her journey from being a first woman commissioner of Education in Connecticut after being in the field of Education for a period of 26 years. She started her career as a math resource specialist for K-8.

She shares that after being a prominent person in the field
off education she always believed in listening to people’s voices. She shares
that while she was listening to one of the young would be principal, who was
curious that how she would balance her home and work and also thought that it’s
about only JUST teaching. I really like
the way Betty, told the young would be principal that teaching is in a way a
leadership post. You need not have to have a title as a leader but you can advocate
your learning’s to the others who may learn from you.

She also shares that how the program of Teacher leader- teachers to exercise an agency as leaders came into light. This program has been a successful one and has been evolved many folds.

Dr. Betty mentioned the 2 models -Project based learning and Social emotional learning but she emphasized that there is no specific model they use but the model of learning depends on the need and interest of the people (learners).

Students do their best when they having the most caring teachers. Shared learning of leadership experiences can be done by creating an environment/setting, asking right questions which can help them to believe in their own strength and motivates them to do better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv9O6wyEJA4&t=233s

“It’s not just about teaching, in fact, you can serve as a leader in the things that you have been doing, create situations for people who view you as a leader.” With this objective, Dr. Betty J. Sternberg initiated a program for teachers who could exercise leadership functions whilst staying connected with the classroom.

It all started with the practice of teacher agency, teachers wanting to connect, interact with other schools, share their experiences, gather diverse perspectives thereby enabling them to augment their experiences. Dr. Betty reflects on how the journey has evolved over time with ideas put forward by teachers, taking ownership, responsibility to accomplish what they envisioned rather than doing things as instructed. Likewise, the program offers freedom to choose different models to reinforce skills, knowledge as per their interest, need, and requirement. Project-based and social-emotional learning were the models chosen by the teachers in one of the years.

Dr. Betty, through reflections from her own professional experience, was able to show the importance of teacher agency and how it is vital for teachers to self-reflect and understand their strengths and weaknesses. My favourite part of the interview was when she not just confidently accepted her weakness in finance but shared how she gets other people to work together with her so that it compliments her own strengths. I think that’s what great leaders should do.

Another interesting thing was to know how her course doesn’t really follow a single one-size-fits-all approach to professional development but rather follows a demand based approach keeping in mind the needs and interest of the participants. This not just allows the course to show impact but also builds agency as teachers get to take ownership of their learning and act constructively to contribute to their own development.

Finally she ends with the concept of how learning never ends. Even at her age, her belief that educating yourself is the best way forward was really motivating. What I understood from her experience is that self-reflection and the ability to figure out who you are as a person and what strengths and weakness you have is the first step to successful leadership. This reflection thus helps you capitalise on your strengths and find solutions in other people to overcome your weakness, thus creating a shared leadership of learning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv9O6wyEJA4&t=1091s

Summarizing - Educators Podcast, #34 Dr. Betty J. Sternberg
" ....Find Ways To Broaden Your World" as stated by Dr. Betty herself at the end of the podcast. She set a program where educationists across district came together to launch teacher agency. This was an evolving program where trainings were given on the base of the need and interest of education. Observations were also made by visiting Canada, Finland and other countries to analyze how the learning and teaching progressed there. This program started with 15 towns which has now 17 towns in 5 years with 308 people in Connecticut involved and evolving from the agency.
Though Dr. Betty doesn't focus on any specific model as she said it is a platform to present various types of model but the recent 2 areas of interest across 15 towns were 'Project based Learning' and 'Social- emotional based Learning'. The idea of any model is the result of what is the need of the situation.
Dr. Betty concluded to create shared leadership of learning experiences for teachers one should be able to understand his/her own strength and should be smart enough to place people around who complement each other's weaknesses. She shared her example being a leader herself she knew finance wasn't her area but she made sure to have someone in her team to create the balance. As Dr. Betty said 'We have to think our education and ourselves as the never ending and broad in the understanding of the world'.

The interview with Dr. Betty having 48 years of experience in the education sector gave an insight into the various strategies for exercising leadership functions. The first key learning point was about how she defined leadership not depending upon the title but on creating the situation where people could view us as a leader within their context by how we influence them.

The program she is running to enable teachers to be a leader justifies her advice for the leaders to create a setting for the people to take up a lead in pursuing what they want. How the program is run not by one model for the professional development but considering the different models based on the interest and need of the fellow members seems to be more effective in fulfilling the needs of diverse participants. Her concept as educating is never-ending supports the true essence of a leader being a lifetime learner to view the world in a broader sense. She also mentioned caring as a factor for influencing people to learn

It is so inspiring to see her dedication in creating situations for people to shine out as I think is the quality required to be a good leader. She concluded by adding up that being a good leader requires self-awareness of our strengths and weakness in order to capitalize on the strength and overcome the weakness by working with people who possess the skills that we lack is a really good strategy of exercising leadership.

Dr. Betty Beautifully yet in simple manner accentuates about the education leadership with her personal experiences where she talks about the special way of training teachers, system supports, and strategies to empower education leadership along with the creation of thriving learning environments.
She mentioned that leader's title or principle does not make one leader but the influences and the opportunity that one imparts on others which whelp their subjects to shine makes one really a true leader.
She highlights about two models:
1. Project Based Learning
2. Social and emotional Based learning.
Leaders must capitalize their own strengths and weakness which would help them to serve their subjects in more caring manner.
we must think of our education for us and for everyone else as never ending and broad that its not about being education nature but really be batchlore's of arts understanding of every of the world in broader sense and knowledge of great literature, great art that is what prepares one to be a strong leader. Leader must broadened ones world beyond just education.
My Learnings are:
1. Active Interaction with each other.
2. International connection.
3. Caring and be supportive to teacher's agency.
4. Have experiences and gather diverse perspective.
5. Knowing
ones strengths and weakness.
6. Creating learning space
7.

Dr. Betty’s interview is inspirational and encouraging as it highlights the importance of having a ‘purpose’ for leaders. Dr. Betty showcased it through her experience of serving the disadvantaged children in K3 schools and made an impact leading her towards a journey thus far. I like the concept of a teacher's agency whereby there is a constant effort by teachers to act purposefully for their professional growth. Similarly, Dr. Betty points out an exercise of leadership where she shares about how it is important for teachers to be leaders indifferent to their position and role and provide support to administration to support them.

Likewise, there was discussion about various professional models which contribute to being leaders. And I agree with Dr. Betty about not following one particular leadership model but instead giving the opportunity for individuals to adapt as per the context. She shared about project-based and socio-emotional models and the elements of leadership that could be woven into execution of mentioned models which I believe are key in developing leaders.

The experience of her being the educational commissioner in her state was very powerful, whereby I liked the participatory approach of gathering involvement and consensus from the various stakeholders in the schools, this creates a sense of ownership and influences positive outcomes. Dr. Betty shared about “Know THYSelf ” which inspired me. Lastly and briefly, my key takeaway is to understand one’s strengths and weaknesses and practice nurturing strengths, and gather support from others to address the weaknesses.

https://youtu.be/Fv9O6wyEJA4?t=1091

She has beautifully underlined her weakness and shared how she coped. Being in the same field, I have always pushed myself to get knowledge I short for. This has led me to an understanding that to perform better we don’t go looking for the places we short for instead we identify our strengths and capitalize on them, know our weaknesses and get the people who will shore up and fill in them. Another greatest learning for me is as she mentioned the world of education is surely evolving but the core is same “Caring People”.

This videocast gave an insight on exercising leadership in any role we are in and mentioned we don’t necessarily need to be in the position of a leader to make an impact. We maybe making impact in our own way. Dr. Betty gave a brief on the history of how the program came into an effect. I liked how she said that the program doesn’t follow any specific model for professional development and is constantly evolving. She, however, highlighted on two models: a. Project Based learning and b. Social-Emotional Learning. Her sharing has taught that to create a better-shared leadership of learning experiences we require; openness and evolvement based on current need.

Dr.Betty an experinced Education Commisioner states that" A leader need to create a situation for the people to view him/her as a leader. There is no need to have a title to function as a leader. Leadership is not just doing but serving. In order to help teachers become leaders without having the influence of being principal of the school she brought out this program encouraging many like minded teachers to become leaders.

When focusing on the models she stressed on the importance of moving according to the need of the hour. But then she highlighted about two models and they are:
   1) Project Based Learning
   2) Social Emotional Based Learning.

Dr.Betty stressed on " Caring people, caring teachers". When we care for others the outcome is always good. She enjoys creating space for people and making them shine in their own way. Best leaders are those who understand their own strengths and weaknesses. She further states that a leader knowing oneself well she/he need to be surrounded by people who would suppliment their weakness. Also the video gave the insight that a leader need to have knowledge of the world in a broder sense.

Educators Podcast,34#
Dr. Betty J. Sternberg

Dr Betty, in this video podcast, reflects on her journey as an academic leader in various leadership positions and sheds light on the importance of teacher agency, including different leadership or professional development models.

Dr.Betty interestingly puts forward the idea of ‘know thyself ‘as a leader, which like very much. Leaders, according to her, should identify their strengths and weaknesses. She means to say that leaders can capitalize their strengths, but can find someone who can share up and fill in their weaknesses.

Another important thing that the interview highlights is professional or leadership development model. She particularly focuses on two types of learning models: project-based learning and social-emotional learning. She believes that no single model is absolute; leaders can adopt one model to another to meet the requirement of learners.

On the whole, she emphasizes on the importance of creating shared leadership of learning experiences for teachers. Shared leadership is possible when leaders create such an environment where teachers can discuss their strengths and weakness for better learning opportunities.
