I learnt that assimilation in France is taken very seriously. This has resulted in many debatable actions taken by the French government to keep everyone in harmony. For example, studies on race, ethnicity and religion are forbidden in France and have to be done privately. Also the word "race" in french is banned from being used in legislation as the government thinks that it implies racist or negative connotations. However, France is still experiences problems involving discrimination. For example, private studies show that people of African descent are more likely to get stopped by the police and have a harder time finding jobs. However, France might also be impeding the progress towards a society with no discrimination by not taking racial statistics in France. Although, people are also afraid that the provision of racial statistics may result in history repeating itself, as some of these statistics were used to deport Jews in .
