The point of this line is to stroke a sense of fear & panic. Thunberg is creating the imagery of a house fire to create a sense of urgency, as a house is on fire it's seen as something of upmost importance, whereas climate change is not seen in that lens. Within this quote, Greta Thunberg produces guilt, fear and a sense of duty in the audience. When she mentions that "adults keep saying", the following sentence sounds redundant, superficial and hollow. It creates a sense that adults have been pretending to take responsibility when they haven't really been doing anything. Greta continues by stating that "I don't want your hope. I don't want you to be hopeful." which seems to add to this idea that the adults have just been talking and not really doing anything. It causes the audience to become guilty of their lack of action which has been replaced by an idealistic complacency. By adding on with "I want you to panic" and "Then I want you to act", Greta creates fear, urgency and a sense of duty. She is attempting to get people to feel fear and to feel a sense of responsibility. She wants them to take action and to move away from complacency.
Greta also adds a bit of personal experience, mentioning how "I want you to feel the fear I feel everyday". She wants to mention how she has been going through all this, how she is also a part of this, and how the prospect of climate change causes her fear. She wants the audience to know that she is afraid and that they should be too. Throughout her speech Greta Thunberg induces strong feelings of guilt and duty in her audience. In this quote specifically, Thungberg appeals to her audiences sense of duty. She gives her audience a black and white direction to pursue climate policy in. Thunberg uses statistics and facts to build her credibility, but to also show the drastic problems that climate change will cause. The statistics illustrate to the audience concrete and easy to understand consequences that will occur if they do not take action. Making her audiences choice black and white forces the audience to reckon with their sense of duty for their own countries, and the world. Thunberg uses the pronoun "we" throughout this quote, this allow her to address the audience in an encompassing way, and to stress that the consequences of climate change will harm everyone. Without making the issue and its solution black and white, it would allow the issue of climate change to be minimize and lumped together with hundreds of other world issues. Stressing the fact that many of the consequences and solutions to climate change are definite allows Thunberg to illuminate the issues and how world leaders must take action to stop climate change.
