This story is about the following hour after Mrs. Mallard heard the news of her husbands death. She just heard that her husband died in a railroad accident. She is comforted by many people but seeks the peace of being alone. While at first she feels grief, she then feels hope of being free and of doing what she wants and not at the will of her husband. Sure she will miss him but having the hope of living for just herself she decides to leave her room filled with joy. She goes downstairs only to realize that her husband has come home, he in fact wasn't even near the accident. With this shock, her heart and hope are crushed and she dies right there on the spot.

A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime as she looked upon it in that brief moment of illumination. She finally felt a weight lift off her shoulders and knew love was no match for the joy she felt. She uses repetition when repeating the word "free".

The body and soul weren't actually free, it was expressing how she felt to not have to lie to herself about someone she didn't truly love and felt trapped by. So when he arrived she wasn't happy but heartbroken to no longer be free. The irony of the statement is that everyone believed she died of happiness when in reality she died of sadness. Foreshadowing is used in the line "Free! Body and soul free!", she foreshadows the end because the body and soul are connected and when one fails so does the other.

Although she had forced herself to love him, when he died she was finally free. She could finally live for herself, for a few moments she felt pure joy. An oxymoron is used in the line, "a monstrous jot that held her", because the words monster and joy contradict each other but are used together.
