Jane is from a wealthy family, but her opportunities are limited. She runs away from home and becomes friends with the girls at the factory. It took much preparation to leave East Berlin and try to convince others to come with them. The workers on the top floors escaped through the roof. Most of the workers who were on the lower floors got trapped by the fire and had to jump out of windows to escape.
