Atoms are the basic unit of matter. They are composed or three things; protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are positively charged and are contained in the nucleo. Neutrons are also in the nucleo but they have no charge. Electrons are negatively charged and orbit around the nucleo, they form a electron shell. There is the same amount of protons and electrons. Ionization occurs when a photon knocks an electron out of its orbit. This creates and ion. Ions are electrically charged atoms.

Every atom has a nucleus, on one or more electrons. Atoms are also composed of Protons, and Neutrons. The number of protons in the nucleus gives the atom its atomic number, and the number of neutrons defines the isotope of the element.

Atoms are the smallest particles that still retain the properties of the substance. They are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The nucleus, or center of an atom, is made up of protons and neutrons. Electrons orbit the nucleus at high speeds. Protons have a positive charge, electrons have a negative charge, and neutrons have no charge. The mass of an atom is equal to the amount of protons + the amount of neutrons. The amount of protons in an atom identifies it's atomic number.
