the events that take place during a Good Friday service? 
traditionally there is no mass and no celebration. there is a fasting within the Church. 

Why do the crowds choose to release Barabbas instead of Jesus when just a few days earlier the crowds were rejoicing in his presence (palm Sunday)?  Pilate saw that a riot might break out  so he said "i am not responsible for the death of this man" the crowd agreed, the Pilate  set the Barabbas free and Jesus was crucified. 

why Christians call this day ‘Good’ Friday. 
they call it ' good' because it led to the resurrection of Jesus and his victory over death and sin.
