College administrators wanted to try and limit the residential groups forming such as Mt. Auburn Street. This is where very expensive dorms were found that housed rich undergraduates. Student unions were a big gain for commuter students and other outsiders it did not help the congregation of other students' living arrangements. Rich students avoided using student union facilities.
