Why do we start by assuming that research institutions have the right to manage ethical approval? And do such institutions prioritise their needs to reduce litigation dangers over the fundamental right of participants to be recognised and heard?

I have enjoyed the link being developed between pseudonymisation and categorisation. I wonder it would help us if we were to treat these labels to what people working in conversation analysis call “membership categorisation devices”. The classic MCD example (from Sacks’ work) was the idea that the MCD “baby” also evokes the relational role of “mother” (or I guess, “daddy”). I think I found Emma’s comments very thought-provoking. Yes, calling participants “Learner 1, 2, 3” reduces them to one role, but it also makes salient one other identify over others (“Teacher”?)
I’m thinking now how the link between categorisation and pseudonymisation might fit into this. The talks I was able to hear online this morning included a session (Benamoussa, Zafir, Jackson) where the social politics embedded in names was the focus of discussion.
I wonder what the panelists or other audience members think about the idea that the pseudonymous names we might use don’t just evoke a role and social position for the participant, but also evoke other roles (whether for us, or for others)?
