Functions of Borobudur Temple in general

This sacred building was mentioned vaguely around 1365, by Mpu Prapanca in his text Nagarakretagama which was written during the Majapahit kingdom. He mentioned the existence of a "Vihara in Budur".

It was built around 800 AD. This time period coincides with the period between 760 and 830.

The construction of Borobudur is estimated to have taken more than 75 - 100 years and was actually completed during the reign of King Samaratungga in 825.

Abandoned since the local population converted to Islam in the 15th century, Borobudur is hidden. Abandoned for centuries, buried under layers of soil and volcanic ash, then overgrown with trees and bushes, Borobudur at that time really resembled a hill. The real reason why Borobudur was abandoned is still unknown.

DESCRIBTION

1. Physical feature : A pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa.

5. History : Borobudur was constructed between about 778 and 850 ce, under the Shailendra dynasty. It was buried under volcanic ash from about 1000 and overgrown with vegetation until discovered by the English lieutenant governor Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814. A team of Dutch archaeologists restored the site in 1907–1911.
