Brunelleschi was born and raised in Florence, the middle child and son of a notary. He joined "The silk merchants" guild and began training as a goldsmith and sculptor joining. After losing the Baptistery Competition to Lorenzo Ghibert, he traveled to Rome with Donatello. There he spent a decade studying the architecture of the ancients.
His architectural designs were a combination of Roman antiquity and medieval Gothic decadence. He produced his own signature style that boasted Roman strength and modern beauty.

He would later refine his depth in composition through Linear Perspective. This work shows an appreciation for detail, and its 3-dimensional quality became extremely popular during the Renaissance.
