Snow White (snow whiteand the seven dwarves- 1937) is a passive character. Her passivity plays a central role in the reinforcing traditional gender roles. Snow white in the disney film, is depicted as a woman who finds fulfillment in serving others and giving them attention. In addition, she is waiting passively for the prince to rescue her. This image of her passivity represents social norms of the 1930s, where females were expected to conform to roles such as homemaking, and dependence on males. Snow White is the ideal woman in the 1930s because her passivity aligns with these expectations- she accepts her position as a woman gracefully, and she also waits for the knight on the white horse, a mail savior. She also hangs her happiness on the relationship with the prince.

The second generation: ( 1989s-1998s) more than just a pretty face.

The little mermaid (1989) in Disney's movie, Ariel is presented as a woman who takes risks, however she's also playing the ideal role of a woman. In the begining of the movie she wants to be with the human world but its forbidden to her. Her actions of rising above the water and sacrificing her voice for living the life that she wants reflects rebellion and the desire to break free from the ideal rules of a woman in those days. While Ariel's choices show rebellion the sacrifice of her voice and life with pain, they also match to the gender rules which revolve around winning a man's love. Her rebellious choices are both empowering and problematic.

The third generation: (1992s-2009s) Independent and courageous

Mulan (1998s) is an active character. Her active behavior is seen by her independence, breaking stereotypes and self discovery. She is also of offering feminist massages in her activity and she is one of the most powerfull princess. She struggles deeply with expectations based on the traditional roles. In the movie Mulan is expected to bring honor to her family by getting married and being the perfect and ideal woman. Instead, she chooses to join the Chinese army by looking like a man. These acts presents Mulan as a strong and brave individual woman who works against those gender roles that she is expected to fulfill. Mulan defies feminine stereotypes by cutting her hair, this act challenges the idea that women are weak or need to confirm to domestic roles. Tn addition her active behavior showcases her strength, intelligence and courage.

The fourth generation: (2016s- ) Strong, powerful with their own desire.

Moana (2016),is an active woman who breaks stereotypes. She is independent and doesn't need a man on her side. Unlike many Disney princesses before, Moama doesn't rely on a romantic relationship or a male savior. Moana in the movie leads her people in the village as their future chief. In addition she takes charge of her destiny, by showing an assertiveness throughout her journey in the ocean. Moana in the journey to Te-fiti learns skills such as sailing and navigation, and she proves that she can do whatever she wants. Her growth into a skilled leader and adventurer highlights her independence. In addition it proves that she is a strong and powerfull woman.

Inspiration for my project: (1937s- ) The development of Disney princesses from dependent to modern heroine

In the beginning I started my project with a group of friends on the olympics, however I didnt feel any connection to the topic. I therefore decided, after getting permission from my teacher, to do a new project on my own.

After waching a Disney movie with my little sister, I realized how the status of females has changed over time.

I wanted to know if the role of Disney princesses changed because of the role of females in society or visa versa.

I chose to do my project on the time line of Disney Princesses, because I'm a huge fan of Disney movies, especially Disney princesses. Moreover , I wanted to know what motivates the princesses and their personality and character.

So we had four different stages: Snow white, Ariel, Mulan and Moana.The four princesses I chose represents different generations of female behavior and based on the female stereotypes.

Snow white- dependent on a male, more than that her happiness relies on his love for her. She plays the role of the ideal woman.

Ariel- Takes risks when she rises above the water to be with the human world. She also decides to do what she wants in contrast to what is expected from her.

Mulan-Strong and independent who defies traditional gender roles and stereotypes. Her actions highlight bravery, intelligence, and self discovery,and she is a powerful feminist princess.

Moana-A strong, independent leader who breaks stereotypes by guiding her people and proving she doesn’t need a man to succeed.

I found out that the princesses developed their own desire during the years. In addition the point of view about the female role in society has changed.

Reflection for the project:

Working on the project was amazing because I’ve been a big fan of Disney princesses since I was a little boy. Realizing that each princess has a connection between her character and the time period in which she was created is fascinating.

I gained several skills from working on this project:

I learned how to find studies about the princesses, their femininity, and their desires. I also learned how to use Padlet as a tool for my research, and how to summarize relevant information from different sources.

The most interesting fact I learned is how the princesses have changed over the years — from being dependent on a male figure to becoming leaders and independent characters.

If I had the chance, I would choose a different princess instead of Ariel. She can be seen in two very different ways: on one hand, as a woman who does what she wants instead of what’s expected of her; but on the other hand, she gives up her voice for a man, which symbolizes dependence on him.
