         <description><![CDATA[<p>SIGN LANGUAGE, GESTURES and BODY MOVEMENTS</p><p><br></p><p>AAC systems that do not require external equipment; unaided AAC includes manual sign languages, gestures, and other formal or informal approaches to nonverbal communication. </p><p>An example of a gesture would be a teacher pointing to an object and the child retrieving that object or the child pointing and the teacher retrieving.  Using a tangible that the child desires and requesting them to point to it in order to have access to it is a strategy to to teach gestural communication. </p><p>For individuals with ASD, the most common approach involves using manual signs from ASL or another one of these systems to produce short phrases concurrent with speech for the key words in a sentence; this has been referred to as “total communication” (Casey, 1978).</p>]]></description>
