Black feminism is the name given to the women's movement acting both in the sphere of gender discussion and in the anti-racist struggle.

"This movement, in addition to considering sexism, argues that class oppression and racism also affect women. These three forms of oppression make black and poor women face more problems than white and wealthy women. From "black feminism" came the term "white feminism" to highlight the problem of racism and inequality experienced by the black and white population.

Islamic feminism is a strand of feminism concerned with the role of women in Islam. This is the struggle for full equality among all Muslims, regardless of sex, in public and private life.

Hannah Gadsby: Nanette. (2018). [video] Australia: Netflix.

Unlike most stand-up comedians, Hannah does not use everyday jokes in her show. She even begins by doing this, but soon turns the show into a place of speech to expose a complicated and traumatized life story because of the sexual abuse she suffered, as well as the prejudices experienced by being homosexual and out of standards.

The Crown. (2016). [video] UK: Netflix.

The series traces the life of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom from her marriage in 1947 to the present day. It is very cool to see the evolution of the protagonist in an era and environment in which sexism reigned. In the first episode, Elizabeth insists that the priest says at the wedding ceremony that she must obey her husband. As time goes on, however, she evolves and looks at all the sexism of the court and also changes her view on marriage.

The Get Down. (2016). [video] New York: Netflix.

"The Get Dow" is a musical series that talks about the birth of hip hop and disco music in the Bronx, a poor neighborhood in New York.
Although the protagonism is very masculine, the personage Mylene is also super important. She has her own wills and a lot of courage to run after her dream and face her religious father. The series also earns points by betting on black and Latino characters and addressing sexual diversity.

Chewing Gum. (2015). [video] UK: E4.

Series that tells the story of Tracey, a religious family girl who wants to lose her virginity. The creator and protagonist of the series, Michaela Coel, creates a narrative centered on a black peripheral girl who, more than wanting to have sex, is trying to understand and find out who she is. Amid very embarrassing situations, she addresses religious extremism, interracial relationships, and various other issues. Besides the protagonist, the series brings several humanized and hilarious secondary feminine characters.

Insecure. (2016). [video] USA: HBO.

In Insecure, Issa Rae is a young woman who works in an NGO to support outlying children and is the only black woman there. Always by her side is her friend Molly, a successful lawyer who is always seeking for a love. Although it seems at first a series about two women seeking romance, in fact Insecure is about being a minority and belonging

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry. (2014). [video] USA: Netflix.

Documentary that presents an inspiring look at the brilliant and courageous women who led the 1960s feminist movement.

Girls. (2012). [video] USA: HBO.

'Girls' stars four friends and the city of New York. It is at the end of the first decade of the millennium, but the protagonists instead of successful professionals have undefined jobs, little money and no stability in their relationships. The tone of the series is sarcastic, resorting to the subject of the amorous or sexual relations failed.

Transparent. (2014). [video] USA: Amazon Video.

The story revolves around a Los Angeles family and their lives after the discovery that the person they knew as their father Mort is a transgendered woman. The series shows family and love relationships, sexuality and non-standard bodies, without being moralistic, but trying to destroy social stereotypes about these subjects. The feminist theme is then approached by this trans woman (and by the homosexual and bisexual daughters), without any kind of glamor or sarcasm. It is a dry, hard approach whose interest lies in realizing that everything is possible, the paradigm shift; just be available and attentive to see.

It is a social and political movement that aims to gain access to equal rights between men and women and that has exists since the nineteenth century. And, contrary to what many people still think, feminism is not the opposite of sexism. While feminism seeks to construct conditions of equality between genders, sexism is behavior that places man in a position of superiority with respect to woman.

The feminist movement, despite having achieved advances such as the right to vote, the establishment of specialized police stations and the insertion of women in the labor market, still has many challenges to overcome, such as: gender violence (harassment and domestic and sexual violence), isparity in positions and remuneration.

“Western or white feminism is not the most developed, but most talked about. Its history is very extensive and there are several movements very different from each other. However, we can salvage some of the most memorable moments of these types of feminism.
One of them is the "343 bitch manifesto," in which 343 women who had aborted pleaded guilty. This gesture gave them so much visibility that Charlie Hebdo magazine gave them a "cover photo" under the ironic title: "Who got the 343 sluts on the abortion manifesto?"
Although feminism was considered a Western principle, different voices emerged that proclaimed other types of feminism. There were other types of feminism that had not been recognized before. Women realized that the experiences of upper-middle-class white women were not a good representation. "Jenny Holzer is an American Conceptual artist best known for her text-based public art projects. One of her works that really caught my attention was a series called Truisms, which were short phrases, sometimes contradictory, that she would display publicly in different forms. She created thousands of tiny phrases and anonymously would project them in cities, on theater marquees, LED caution signs, and projected on the sides of buildings. Some of the phrases are inertly feminist, such as the famous one, “raise boys and girls the same way”, "a man can’t know what it’s like to be a mother", and "everyone's work is equally important".
I believe these truisms are meant to evoke a feeling of uncomfort in the viewer and make them question their values. In particular because of the way these are displayed, anonymously and in public areas, there is a question of who these phrases are from and who they are meant to be seen by. By displaying these in the way she does, she shows how messages are constantly being given to us, whether subconsciously or not and subverts this medium to make uncomfortably true statements about sex, gender, and power change the way in which people may think.

Social inequality and poverty are social problems that affect most countries today. Poverty exists in all countries, poor or rich, but social inequality is a phenomenon that occurs mainly in undeveloped countries.
Although Brasil in recent years has presented a decrease in poverty, the level of social inequality in the country is still notorious.
Whether due to its slave-owning past or lack of investment in infrastructure, Brasil still has very large levels between the richest and the poorest.

"It is crucial to understand the relationship between poverty, inequality and growth. The high inequalities in Brazil mean that – without change in inequality – Brazil would need even higher growth than China to achieve the same results in poverty reduction. The data of inequality improve when basic public services like basic education or basic health care are included, which have enhanced significantly, though quality is still an issue. Simultaneously, other aspects would worsen the real inequality. For example, poor people are affected disproportionally by crime or the impact of environmental degradation (Thomas, 2006). Inspired by the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, Paul Pfeiffer's Vitruvian Figure (2008) is a large-scale sculpture, about three meters high, with one million seats - the actual capacity of the arena is 80,000 spectators.

Ttéia (2002) is a work of the last stage of Lygia Pape's career and condenses a series of questions raised in the trajectory of this artist who is one of the main voices in Brazilian art of the second half of the 20th century. The installation is the result of the experiences that Pape began in 1977 with his students from the Visual Arts School of Lage Park, with strands stretched in the middle of nature. Later, in the beginning of the 90s, the artist rehearsed another development of this research, which would be carried out as meshes thrown between buildings and scattered around the city, as a "proposal of solidarity". At the end of this decade, however, the Tteias finally reached the format to which Pape would devote much of his work to that period: large installations with metallic wires linking elements of architecture; in the case of Tethys 1C, from floor to ceiling; in the case of others, two corners of the exhibition space.

The tile, one of the recurring themes of Adriana Varejão's work, reappears in Linda do Rosário (2004), one of the most important works of the series Charques. In this sculpture, architecture is associated with the body, and the matter of construction becomes flesh. Forty Part Motet

Thomas Tallis, a 16th-century English composer, composed Spem in Alium nunquam habui for the celebration of Queen Elizabeth's 1st birthday in 1575. The moteto (a type of medieval polyphonic composition) for eight choirs of five voices deals with humility and transcendence, two important themes for the Catholic composer at a time when the Catholic faith was repressed by the sovereign state of England. The piece is known as one of the most complex polyphonic works for choral singing ever composed. Using individual microphones, Janet Cardiff recorded each member of the Salisbury Cathedral choir, working on male voices - bass, baritone and tenor - as well as a childlike soprano. At the installation, the artist uses a speaker for each voice, which allows the viewer to hear the different voices and perceive the different combinations and harmonies as they go through the installation. Janet Cardiff is one of the most prolific artists in an art that uses the latest technology. His work employs several expressive means, covering video, installation and sound recording.

"Inequality of opportunity lies at the very heart of discussions about inequality and social welfare. It occurs when people living in the same society do not have access to the same opportunities. High levels of inequality of opportunity mean that people’s circumstances at birth – their gender, the place where they were born, their ethnicity or their parental background –determine to
a significant degree the educational qualifications they obtain, the type of job they get and, ultimately, their level of earnings. Inequality of opportunity is thus widely regarded as the unfair part of inequality. The works of Cândido Portinari show the contrasts of Brazil; the focus is on denouncing social inequalities in the vast majority of them. They brought images of the everyday life of the lower classes, especially rural workers and their families. The tendency to use dark tones characterizes the sad and miserable reality of these people. Although they were painted between the 40s and 60s, they still portray the poverty scenario that characterizes a large portion of the population today.

His work strikes a chord with many, particularly youth, for the blunt usage of messages within an art-form that was often regarded as existent only within the margins of society. Banksy isn’t seen as just an artist, but also as a philosopher and political spokesman against capitalism, war, theism, totalitarianism and fascism. By stirring the youth with broad and direct statements, as well as through his constant subversion of authority, Banksy has managed to develop a large following.
The seductive nature of Banksy’s work within the hip-hop community is easy to understand, and can be attributed to two significant factors: 1) the fact that graffiti never had a universal flag-bearer and 2) the ease of his artwork. Graffiti comprises a quarter of the so-called hip-hop culture, but similar to b-boying, it is largely marginalized by emceeing and djing. This isn’t to say it doesn’t earn respect, but few would argue that its stature among the masses is equal to the hip-hop elements centered around music. Although there have been numerous graffiti artists who gained some notoriety prior to Banksy, but none have had a similar universal following.

"Salgado has earned fame for his stark photos of people coping with the effects of poverty, famine, industrialization and political oppression. He has published several books and has received awards for his socially conscious photojournalism. [...] Salgado's photography has often focused on the effects of hardship, poverty and oppression on people of various cultures, and with the effects of industrialization on the natural landscape. Inspired by the photojournalism of Lewis Hine, W. Eugene Smith and Walker Evans, Salgado has tackled subjects like famine, poverty and social inequality in black-and-white photos that are unsparing yet often beautiful.

In 1977, Salgado began to photograph the rural peasants of Latin America; this series was published in 1986 as his first book, Other Americas. Around this time, he worked with the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders on a project documenting the effects of famine in Africa. He published two books of these photographs, titled Sahel: Man in Distressand Sahel: The End of the Road, and donated proceeds from the sales to Doctors Without Borders.

From 1986 to '92, Salgado traveled to 23 countries to visit manual laborers in large-scale industrial and agricultural sites, including oil fields and commercial fisheries. This led to his 1993 book Workers, which revealed the humanity of these individuals even as they toiled under harsh conditions. His series Migrations, begun in 1993 and published as a book in 2000, focused on large groups of people who have immigrated or relocated under duress, especially from rural areas to cities.

For Genesis, a project begun in 2004 and published in 2013, Salgado turned his attention back to the landscape and wildlife, traveling to the most remote parts of the globe to photograph places where nature remains untouched by human development.

One of the most interesting things I look for about him was that the reason for Sebastião's photographs being black and white refers to an important technique. It is observed that all the work of Salgado is realized in black and white. The absence of color means lack of information, that is, the focus is on the clarity of the situation portrayed. The author of the photo wishes that the one who observes it concentrates on the situation itself, and not on one or more elements of it, what matters is the context, the impact of the moment portrayed.

"Sara Ramo integrates a generation of artists who, influenced by the Brazilian art of the 1960s, explore concepts of the counterculture through a wide variety of media, from installation to sculpture, through photography, video and performance. This specific work from Sara Ramo is a very strong reference for my project. It is designed to make you explore the environment and project new looks into space.
I, personally, when I entered the room, hardly noticed the fissure; I thought it was just a blank environment. However, I forced myself to understand what was going on there and ended up discovering this wonderful and amazing piece of art.
And I would very much like to cause this effect with my own project: people will have to pay attention and look/seacrh for the problem.

"Tuca Vieira has been dedicated to photography for 25 years, having worked mainly in the area of photojournalism. Within its diverse production, social and urban themes clearly stand out. Tuca covered demonstrations in the big cities, dispute over indigenous lands, conflicts in the countryside, uncontrolled urbanization, among other themes that illustrate the inequalities of Brazil so well. For example, it is one of the most emblematic photographs of contemporary Brazil - Paraisópolis, 2005 - that portrays the motto of the favela of São Paulo with the district of Morumbi.

Tuca's look recorded in the photos is found here with the efforts of a Confederation of 20 non-governmental organizations called Oxfam, which operate in 94 countries. Now, the fight against poverty and inequality has a new voice in Brazil, which joins the work of other Brazilian social organizations.

Tuca's images open up possibilities for us to think and feel some elements of inequality in our country; perhaps the biggest problem in Brazil and Latin America. "Desprivatizar a Cidade: Políticas e narrativas contra-hegemônicas"

On Wednesday, October 3rd, I went to Tapera Taperá and participated on a debate about the overwhelming privatization of Brazilian cities. The idea was to unite the political struggles of the collectives Vigência and Br Cidades in relation to the privatization of the cities, especially the urban policy defended by the former mayor of São Paulo, João Doria. The meeting was attended by Americo Sampaio (Nossa São Paulo), Tatiana Ferraz (Vigencia), Tereza Herling and Celso (BrCidades-NúcleoSP).
We were led by a very horizontal conversation, with some initial lines seeking to represent various perspectives on current urban politics.

In the field of photographic imaging, a photographic mosaic, also known under the term Photomosaic, a portmanteau of photo and mosaic, is a picture (usually a photograph) that has been divided into (usually equal sized) tiled sections, each of which is replaced with another photograph that matches the target photo. When viewed at low magnifications, the individual pixels appear as the primary image, while close examination reveals that the image is in fact made up of many hundreds or thousands of smaller images. Most of the time they are a computer-created type of montage.

Art of paste posters on the street was born in the late 19th century with the advent of the mass printing industry (press), which made possible the creation of a new medium: poster / poster. Wheatpaste is a very simple glue that will cost you under a buck a gallon to make. It's just flour and water. The main advantage of wheatpaste is not only its cost, but if you need large quantities of glue, you probably already have everything you need in your kitchen. No need to run to the store and buy anything.

STEP 1:
Combine 1 part flour to 4 parts water in a large saucepan.
Whisk constantly to prevent chunks from forming.
Heat to just below a boil until it has reached the desired consistency.

The glue can now be used immediately. If you plan to use your glue when it has cooled, be sure to make the glue a little thinner than you want it, because it will thicken up. Also, glue feels a lot less disgusting on your hands when it's not cold.

You should use the glue soon, because un-dried glue will start to smell after a couple days if nothing is added to prolong its shelf life.

STEP 2:
Wheatpaste will work completely fine with just flour and water, some say you can achieve better properties in the glue by adding things, but others argue against adding anything to it, therefore I cannot confirm or disprove the flowing, it is simply all the comments from wheatpaste recipes online rolled together:

Salt: one spoonful or more of salt per 1/4 gallon will increase the shelf life of unused glue, and dismiss any chance of the glue rotting while drying. People also use it in freezing temperatures to lower their glues freezing point, but some say it but increases dry time exponentially, especially in the cold. Add anytime as long as it dissolves.

Sugar: two spoonfuls or more of sugar per 1/4 gallon will make the glue "stickier" when wet, and could increase dry strength due to the crystalline structure of glucose, but most say it is completely unnecessary. I think it slightly caramelizes to help thicken the mixture. Add near end of heating to prevent carmalization.

Cinnamon/Peppermint extract: 5 drops per 1/4 gallon will make the unused glue rot slower, allowing it to keep for several weeks. Add any time.

Alum: one spoonful per 1/4 gallon will also make the glue rot slower, allowing it to keep for several weeks. Possibly a thickening agent as well. Add near end of heating.

Vinegar: one spoonful per 1/4 gallon is also known to make the glue rot slower, allowing it to keep for several weeks. Also known to increase the durability of the dry wheatpaste. Add near end of heating.

Borax: two spoonfuls per 1/4 gallon may help reduce the smell while the wheatpaste is wet. May also change consistency for the better. Add near end of heating.

Glue: Adding glue or a powdered glue such as wallpaper paste MAY strengthen the glue, but also add to the cost. Wallpaper paste is sometimes know to be weaker than wheatpaste. Don't add too much or the glue will be too thick and wont soak into pores. Add near end of heating.

Sawdust: Sawdust added to almost any glue will increase it's gap-filling ability. Could be used to make molds.

STEP 3:
If you don't want to bother cleaning a sticky saucepan, or don't have access to a stove, small batches of wheatpaste (suitable for an entire paper mache project) can be made in the microwave:

Use 1 part flour with 4 parts water in a Mason jar or any other microwave-safe container.
Microwave for a minute at a time until it reaches the right consistency.
Whisk the mixture very well in between minutes to prevent chunkiness.

Once the glue gets ever so slightly thicker, microwave for less than 30 seconds at a time, because the glue thickens exponentially fast.

STEP 4:
Wheatpaste will glue any porous paper to another with ease and dry to a rock-hard finish. It will also stick to many other porous materials such as concrete and wood. You can apply wheatpaste with a paintbrush, foam brush, roller, or just a piece of cardboard will work fine. Like all glues, apply only a very thin coat to both materials and stick together for best strength. If you are doing anything like paper mache, soaking your pieces in wheatpaste and using them will create help create very rigid structures. The glue will harden fairly quickly (an hour or two), but the paper will still be very wet for at least one day. A fan can speed up the process.

"Todos os Olhos, the first individual of the artist José Bento in the gallery occupies the whole space of Annex Millan and gathers a set of 15 sculptures and two unpublished photographs. Known for his taste and dexterity in working with wood, José Bento presents in this individual a beautiful series of ten beans carved in different types and colors of this material.

The work that gives the title to the exhibition, for example, is a series of ten bean-shaped wood carvings, each one of different weight, density and coloring, positioned in the main room of the Annex. The pieces represent some of the types of beans most consumed by Brazilians, such as black beans, Rioja beans, frost, red and red. If added, the weight of these jobs results in exactly 1283 kg, which, according to IBGE, is the average amount of beans that a Brazilian consumes throughout his life. In the back of the room, behind the beans, a photograph: "Xangô" sees a voodoo priest holding a small "Tree" by José Bento at the foot of a statue of Xangô in Benin, Africa. "Inviting the public to a sensory experience, Jungle Jam is a kinetic installation made up of dozens of identical pieces arranged horizontally on the walls of a room and spaced apart at regular intervals. Each piece consists of a mixer of portable food (mixer), and an ordinary plastic bag, attached to the end of the pin, replacing the cutting pieces.
When turned on, the motors make these pins rotate with the bags, which hit the walls and produce syncopated noises. These motors are commanded by a box called 'big head', which creates, through a computer program, random patterns that never repeat themselves, determining which motors work at each moment and which ones stand still. This work really caught my attention and I got amazed by it.
I figured out that this art piece can have many possibilities of interpretation, as I talked to some friends about it. But, in my vision, this work can be talking about slavery jobs, since the exposed bags are of known and famous brands, and the motors are from sewing machines.
It is definitely a strong reference for my project.

"Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz is a photographer, draftsman, painter and engraver. The artist Vik Muniz works with series of photographs and recreates with diverse materials such as perforated papers, cotton, magazine clippings, liquid chocolate, sugar or dust. It is very interesting to see how his figures are created from so unexpected materials.
And his works also give a little mosaic impression (which is what I plan to do for my project).

"His procedure consists of repeatedly drilling reproductions in digital photography of paintings by masters such as Rugendas (1802-1858) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), spreading circles leaked over the surface of the work, thus revealing parts of another image put in a second plan. The artist therefore does not deal with any corrosive or abrasive material, but at a distance these surfaces transmit something worn, rusty, or even soiled.

This false appearance of decomposition triggers an ambiguity of meanings: between a critique of art history and a nostalgia for it. At the same time, there is an inversion in one of the fundamental conceptual pairs of painting - depth and surface. Afonso chooses to reproduce pictorial works that have as central concern the reproduction of the sensation of depth, via resources of perspective.

Berna's work is a super social criticism and deals with themes that, despite being very heavy, are current and need to be discussed. Her works have the capacity to provoke strong emotions in the spectators.

In this self portrait, by Ana Calzavara, she uses and mixes two different techniques: woodcut and print in methacrylate.
The use of methacrylate here has a very strong meaning and it is very suitable. It is placed in front of the woodcut and the print on it helps to to highlight some details of the face; such as eyes, nose and mouth.

As I am thinking of using methacrylate in my project, that is a great reference.

I put this work by Mira Schendel, from the exhibition Signals, as a reference because she uses methacrylate and acrylic to hang and expose her works; and I also think about making this type of thing with my work.

While I was having my progress tutorial with Ana, I told her I did not have anything in mind yet of what the main image will look like.
As we discussed a lot about it, we ended up thinking together that maybe an beautiful and breathtaking picture of a postcard of some touristic place in Brazil would be a good idea.
