The most commonly violated commandment among students is likely Thou shalt not use or copy software for which you have not paid, especially when it comes to illegally downloading software, movies, music, or using pirated versions of educational tools. Plagiarism, which relates to Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output, is also a frequent issue, particularly when students fail to properly attribute sources or copy content directly from the internet.

These violations often occur due to a mix of convenience, ignorance, and the perception that digital property isn’t as valuable as physical property. Students may not fully understand the legal or ethical implications of using pirated content, or they may feel that since digital content is easily accessible, it is acceptable to use without proper payment or permission. Additionally, the pressure to succeed academically may drive some students to plagiarize or cut corners by using unauthorized materials.

Schools should provide more comprehensive training on digital ethics and the consequences of unethical behavior. Awareness campaigns about the importance of intellectual property rights and the impact of piracy could help students understand the value of digital content. Or providing students with legal, affordable, or free alternatives to software and content could curb the temptation to use pirated versions. Platforms offering student discounts or open-source software could be promoted.
