The statues of Robert E. lee should be kept. Although, many can argue that there is no reason to have statues of confederate leaders, they still made a large impact on history. Personally I do not support confederates, but I do support history. It is not about their character. It is about how they made an impact on our world today.

Although that the statues are a reminder of our history of slavery and racial oppression there are people who find this offensive because of what the statue represents. During the civil war the southern states revolted against the government putting up these statues for what THEY believe in now these statues can be considered beautiful they can be considered a reminder of the things we overcome not of our once wrong beliefs. Its one of the last of three confederate monuments today. I think that the Rober E. Lee should stay

According to CNN news Mayor Catherine Pugh has made the decision to remove the confederate statues for the safety of her community. This decision was made by a vote from the counsel. This is also what the people have been wanting, they have been rioting, vandalizing and hurting others over this issue. The purpose of the confederate symbols was due to mainly women starting this, making sure that the war and what the war was about was not forgotten. The meaning of the statue was seen as offending to the people. therefor they have been removed.

Dallas' city council decided that the statues should be removed due to their supposed racist meaning. The article I found, written by an art critic based in Dallas named Rick Brettel, considers the possible viewpoint of the sculptor of the monument in Dallas. The sculptor's name was Alexander Phimister Proctor. He was from the North, and very opposed to slavery and racism. "For Proctor, the idea of sculpting a general -- riding alongside a soldier with whom he served and who survived him -- was the chance to create one of the very few equestrian monuments in the history of art in which a leader shares his monument with someone nameless." This is from an article about a similar statue in which General Lee is beside an unknown soldier, both on horses.

This is a photo of the sculptor beside the monument he created.
