My school does not have a lot of diversity in the general population. Interestingly, the students that self-select into the IB programme tend to represent a wider degree of diversity than the general population. I want to make sure my students of color and my white students understand the concepts and importance of anti-racism. I’m also troubled by the fact that my school board meetings (like many others) have featured a small contingent of very vocal parents who equate these discussions to “CRT” and oppose them.

anti-racism is necessary for all students to thrive and self-actualize. White supremacy harms everyone, particularly people of color, and as a school that racially integrated in recent years (meaning, white kids started coming to the school), we've been really confronted with the impact of bias and radicalized harm. We have staff, family and student equity teams, and have done some really powerful internal, interpersonal, and institutional work. And we still have a long way to go. We want our all of our students, particularly our students of color, to feel seen, heard, valued and challenged.

We have students whose racial and ethnic backgrounds are very diverse and as a language immersion school we have non-American born members of our teaching staff as well as American born members. That is not the same as racial diversity but it overlaps. IB values are those of inclusion and multi-cultural understanding and so we need to live those values as teach them.
