Summary of Mr. Lincoln's Way

Mr. Lincoln is a beloved principal. He spends a lot of time with his students and does special things for them. Everyone at school loves Mr. Lincoln except a bully named Eugene. Eugene is a trouble maker and is not well liked by the teachers or other students. He does mean things like call students names and take their things. He even almost blurted out a racial comment towards Mr. Lincoln. Mr. Lincoln knew that he needed to help Eugene. One day, he saw him watching a bird sit on the branch of a tree. He spoke with Eugene about birds and found out that he knew a lot about them. Eugene told Mr. Lincoln that he learned about the birds from his grandfather. Eugene helped to fill the atrium at the school with plants that would attract birds. The other children at the school loved the atrium as well. Eugene was happy and no longer teased the other students. A pair of Mallard ducks built a nest in the atrium. All kinds of birds came to the atrium. Mr. Lincoln helped to teach Eugene that just as all the birds were different, people are different as well, but we are all special in our own ways. The students watched as the ducklings hatched and went off to the pond with their parents. Even Eugene's grandfather was there. Eugene made a promise to Mr. Lincoln that he would make him proud of him. Eugene was true to his promise.

I would use this book in my classroom with my 4th grade reading group. I could add in the book after our unit on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I could explain to the students just as Dr. King did amazing things to try to change people's ways of thinking, Mr. Lincoln changed Eugene's way of thinking. Instead of being a troubled bully, he turned out to be a teacher who inspired others.
