Cab Calloway the third was born on December 25 1907 in Rochester New York.  When he was a teen he discovered his love and passion for music and singing. His father who died when he was 13 was a lawyer. He was expected to follow in his father's footsteps as a lawyer, he had a bigger pull to performing but his mother and sister did not want him to be a singer.

He and his sister made a deal that he would go study law in Chicago if she would get him an audition for one of the revues there. He won the audition and enrolled in school doing both at once.   He had amazing talents but also had an outages style that had made him a star. He contributed to the Harlem Renaissance by his style and talent. He wore zoot suits and other amazing outfits.  In 1925 Calloway started his career as a drummer in the Sunset Orchestra. About two years later he created his own band named the Big Band. Cab Calloway was a bandleader, jazz singer, dancer, and actor. He was a very well known musician and was a musical icon. Additionally, his group was one of the first top  African American bands to tour the deep south. Above all the Big Band in the 30s and 40s was the most successful jazz group of its day.  In the thirties, he was known as the most known and highly compensated African American entertainer in the country. For this reason, He was important to the Harlem Renaissance because he pushed the boundaries of what people thought of African Americans. Meaning people thought less of them because they were different from them.  Calloway introduced swing music and Harlem Renaissance culture to big audiences and used his popularity to have the idea grow. He experimented with style and was different.
