This is because the Germans had already started the research on building the atomic bombs and were intending to use it against us. We had only found out about this when Albert Einstein warned president Franklin Roosevelt and convinced him to beat the Nazi's to it. When FDR was informed, it was immediately a race to who could develop the weapon first. However, before we could finish building the bombs, the Germans had surrendered.
