Jeannette slowly realizes her parents are not what they pretend to be and her father is not actually going to build a glass castle. She grows to want to be in control and to be her own person. When Jeannette moved to New York she attempted to separate herself from her parents and doesn't let them live in her home, she keeps them separate from her personal life because she sees the way they drag Lori down. They all became successful in the face of adversity. Having to work against the grain is difficult for anyone, and Jeannette and her siblings pulled through and made good lives for themselves when they felt stuck in their situation. Her father raises her to be tough and this ties into how she is able to defend herself. As a young child she admires her father and sees him as the main character in the world. He shapes her personality as a strong willed fighter who always pushed through. Her father may have used some unorthodox ways to bring her up her this way. He states "If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim." before he throws his daughter into the water.
