What is "netiquette"?

"Netiquette" is the correct way of communicating online. It understanding how to use the internet properly and safely. Using the internet to interact with someone is different to speaking to someone in person.
Practicing netiquette is very important for your students. It is important for them to understand their are rules when using the internet. Teachers and parents are responsible for teaching children the rules.
As for professional using netiquette is very important. You want to make sure that you are using everything properly. When going to email a professor I want to make sure I am respectful and aware of the language I am using. I want to make sure that I am citing all my sources.
In my personal life, netiquette has taken a big role in my life. I have been practicing how to use netiquette ever since I started using a computer and phone. While using my computer or phone I always make sure that I am respectful. My parents have always taught me the importance of netiquette.
My parents always told me growing up that I should be using netiquette online. They always brought up how people can see whatever you post. Also, if I would go out to a party or something to never have alcohol in my pictures because I was in athletics, so coaches or athletic directors were able to see my social media. I was taught to have clean social media accounts for many reasons.

Netiquette #1: Be Respectful

Being respectful online is just as important as being respectful face to face with someone. When you are behind the computer screen you might think it is easier to say something hurtful to someone. While behind the screen you don't see how the person reacts to what you have said and how it affected them. People are still affected the same way by words that you write. You always have to think to yourself treat people the way you want to be treated.
I chose the netiquette Be Respectful because it was something I have been taught growing up throughout my life. In my household and in school is where I've learned how to be respectful to classmates, teachers, siblings, family members, and everyone else. Being respectful is something that should be taught to every student. It's important for children to understand that when they are saying things to other classmates it can affect them. Children need to be taught that even if it's said online it is still affecting the person the same way. If you can not say something to someone in person to their face then, it shouldn't be said at all.

Netiquette #2: Think before you post

Thinking before you post something online is very important. There is many different reasons why this is important. One reason for this is once something is posted on social media it is out for the whole world to see it. While posting something you might think only your friends can see it but your friends can show their friends. Another reason to think before you post is to make sure that you're not giving out too much personal information. Your friends aren't the only ones viewing your information.
I chose this netiquette because children at a young age aren't aware of the consequences of posting something online. I think this is very important to teach students. Everything you are posting online can be seen by more then just your friends. When I was younger I also remembered my parents telling me whatever you are posting online is most likely getting seen by someone that you don't want to see it. They also told me people might use something you post against you. If my parents and teachers didn't teach me about posting things on social media I would of never known there were consequences for posting certain things.

Netiquette #3: Be aware of strong language, all caps, and exclamation points.

Being aware of how you are typing online is important because of how people might read it. What you type or post on the internet can easily be misreads or misunderstood by people. It is also a reason why people may be confused on how you meant to send something, especially when you are texting someone.
I chose this netiquette because it has happened to me. I have been in awkward positions where people did not understand me or misread it and decided to say something back to me. It is not the best position to be in with someone or even a group of people. It is good to practice this because nowadays, many jobs will do a background check on your social media and see what you have posted. No business wants an employee who is constantly tweeting out strong language about certain things. For myself as a professional, I want to be the one setting a good example for my students and even my children one day. I personally don't want to be looked at as a vulgar person on social media.

Netiquette#4: Don’t post or share (even privately) inappropriate material.

This netiquette is pretty self explanatory. Posting or sharing this information can get you in a lot of trouble especially in background checks.
I would teach this to my students because you don't want to be looked at in that way. You don't want to lose a job interview or opportunity because something that might be considered inappropriate. As for myself as a professional, I could possibly or most likely lose a job over something I might share or post. I also don't want to be looked at as a person who is considered inappropriate.

I would teach my students how to use good and proper language online. As a teacher I would explain what words and types of words are not good to use online. I would also teach them when the right time to use all capital letters and exclamation points is. Its important to use proper language when you are posting something. People tend to get into bad habits of carrying how they post online into the real world
