The border was originally drawn in 1819. Buterosion has changed the falls since then. The exactmodern border is uncertain.<br><br>Niagara Falls is part of the Great Lakes chain. Waterflows along the river from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.The river is about 36 miles (60 kilometers) long. Itdrops a total of about 325 feet (100 meters). A littlemore than half of this total drop happens at NiagaraFalls. During periods of high flow, as much as 44million gallons (167 million liters) of water passes overthe falls each minute.<br><br>A pair of islands split the falls into three parts. GoatIsland stands between the Bridal Veil Falls and theHorseshoe Falls. Goat Island can be reached onlyfrom the New York side. No one lives on the island,but it is a popular tourist attraction. It offers visitorssome of the most beautiful views of the falls. Thesmaller Luna Island stands between the AmericanFalls and Bridal Veil Falls.
