We use the third conditional to talk about REGRETS. The main characteristic of the 3rd conditional is that the events happened of not in the PAST, but, in the present we live the consequences.

FORMULA:

If + past perfect + would have + pas participle verb (3) + complement

Examples:

If I had saved more money, I wouldn't have troubles buying my house today.
If they had invited me to the party, I wouldn't have gone any way.

We can use different modals when we use the 3rd conditional.

could (possibilities 80%)
might (less possibility 20%)
would (the most common)

Examples:

If I had trained harder, I could have won the race.
If my classmate had explained the problem, I might have helped him.
