These initiatives aim to support students who are struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression. According to a recent survey, more than 40% of teenagers reported feeling overwhelmed by schoolwork and social pressure. In response, many schools are hiring professional counselors and offering mental health education during regular class hours. Some schools have even created “wellness rooms,” where students can relax and calm down during the day. Teachers are also receiving training to recognize early signs of mental health issues in their students. Parents have welcomed these changes, saying they feel more confident about their children’s well-being at school. Experts believe that these efforts will help create a healthier and more supportive learning environment.

In recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of single-use plastics such as masks, gloves, and food containers has sharply increased. Unfortunately, most of this waste is not properly recycled and ends up in landfills, rivers, and oceans. Environmental groups warn that plastic pollution is harming wildlife and entering the human food chain through microplastics. Some governments are now taking action by banning plastic bags and encouraging the use of eco-friendly alternatives. However, experts argue that stronger international cooperation and stricter regulations are still needed. Citizens are also being urged to reduce their plastic consumption by choosing reusable items and supporting sustainable products. If no action is taken, the level of plastic pollution could double by 2040, causing irreversible damage to the environment.

Title: Youth Unemployment Rates Continue to Rise Amid Economic Uncertainty

Who? Young job seekers and recent graduates
What? Are struggling to find stable employment
When? Over the past year, especially after recent economic slowdowns
Where? In many developed and developing countries
Why? Due to slow job market recovery and rising competition
How? Through delayed hiring, reduced job openings, and lack of experience

Article:
Youth unemployment has become a growing concern in both developed and developing countries. Recent reports show that the number of young people unable to find stable work has increased significantly over the past year. Economists explain that many companies are delaying new hires due to rising costs and economic uncertainty. At the same time, young applicants often lack the work experience needed to compete with older, more experienced candidates. As a result, many graduates are forced to accept part-time or temporary jobs that do not match their skills. Governments are trying to address this issue by expanding job training programs and supporting internships. However, experts say long-term solutions are needed, including educational reform and greater investment in youth-focused industries. Without meaningful action, the high youth unemployment rate could lead to serious economic and social consequences in the future.

Nurses Exhausted by Emotional Labor: What Role Should Hospitals Play?

Who? Hospitals, government, and healthcare institutions

When? Immediately, starting now

Where? Hospitals and healthcare settings nationwide

What? Implement measures to protect and support nurses from emotional labor

How? By providing various support systems to ensure nurses emotional well-being

Why? To protect nurses and ensure the sustainability of the healthcare system

Article: Emotional labor among nurses working in hospitals has reached critical levels. Constantly suppressing emotions while interacting with patients, families, colleagues, and supervisors has become a routine part of their work, leading to frequent occurrences of depression, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion.

A 2017 survey conducted across 42 hospitals nationwide found that 98% of nurses experienced emotional labor. Nurses working in environments with high demands for emotional regulation reported higher levels of depression and fatigue. In addition, many face secondary harms such as verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and threats. However, institutional protections and support systems to address these issues remain insufficient.

Given these realities, hospitals must take active steps to protect nurses. This includes establishing education programs on emotional labor, institutionalizing psychological counseling and regular mental health check-ups, creating dedicated channels for reporting workplace grievances, and implementing internal evaluation systems to improve organizational culture. Furthermore, governments and healthcare institutions should collaborate to develop and enforce legal frameworks, such as emotional labor protection laws, ensuring their effective application.

As South Korea enters an aging society, the role of nurses is becoming increasingly vital. For sustainable healthcare, emotional labor must be recognized not as an individual’s burden, but as a responsibility that organizations and society must address.

S-BRT's Pros and Pitfalls: Who Really Benefits from Transit Innovation?

Recently, Changwon City introduced the Super Bus Rapid Transit (S-BRT) system on select roads to improve urban traffic efficiency. This system allows buses to stop at center-lane stations without needing to move to the far-right lanes, improving travel times and punctuality. However, because the stations are located in the middle of the road, passengers must use crosswalks and often end up missing their buses right before their eyes due to traffic signals. Notably, major roads have been reduced from 6-8 lanes to just 4, and private car drivers are now experiencing worsened congestion. The main concern is that private vehicle users still vastly outnumber public transport users, meaning more people are actually inconvenienced. Experts argue that to fix this imbalance, the BRT network should expand into high-traffic urban areas, along with policies like incentives and fare discounts to encourage public transport use. They also emphasize the importance of infrastructure such as overpasses and underpasses that allow safe, signal-free pedestrian access to BRT stations. To ensure S-BRT's long-term success, a comprehensive approach that balances road equity and commuter convenience is essential.

Especially in developing countries and among low-income groups, the lack of medical infrastructure and low capacity to respond to climate change result in greater damage.

Rising temperatures increase the incidence of heatstroke, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses, while infectious diseases such as dengue fever and malaria are spreading to wider areas. In addition, heatwaves and natural disasters lead to reduced agricultural productivity, shorter working hours, and increased medical expenses, making people’s lives even poorer. In this way, climate change is not just an environmental issue but a direct threat to health and the economy.

To solve this problem, active measures are needed, including reducing carbon emissions, strengthening healthcare systems, establishing disaster response frameworks, and protecting climate-vulnerable groups. If we fail to respond properly to this crisis now, more people will fall ill and become impoverished in the future.

To solve this mystery, the astrophysicists proposed that the decay of dark matter released energy that kept hydrogen gas from cooling. This process allowed massive gas clouds to collapse directly into supermassive black holes, bypassing the slower, traditional star-formation route.

Using advanced simulations that combined general relativity and quantum field theory, the team demonstrated that the presence and properties of dark matter could dramatically accelerate black hole growth in the infant universe.

While the exact nature of dark matter remains unknown, this research provides a compelling clue about its influence on cosmic structure. Some scientists urge caution, noting that alternative explanations may exist, but the findings open exciting new directions for both theoretical and observational studies.

Future observations with instruments like JWST and the upcoming Einstein Probe are expected to further test these ideas and deepen our understanding of dark matter’s role in shaping the universe.

5W1H

Who? Astrophysicists from the University of California

What? Proposed that dark matter decay enabled the rapid formation of supermassive black holes in the early universe

When? Published in early 2024

Where? In the journal Physical Review Letters

Why? To explain the existence of supermassive black holes soon after the Big Bang, which standard models cannot account for

How? By using simulations that combine general relativity and quantum field theory to model the effects of dark matter decay on gas cloud collapse

Understanding the Causes and Effects of Teenage Drug Misuse

Teenage drug misuse has become an alarming issue in many countries around the world. Why do teenagers start using drugs? What leads them to misuse substances despite knowing the risks? Who is responsible for preventing this trend? These are urgent questions society must answer. Experts suggest that the main causes of drug misuse among teenagers include peer pressure, stress from school or family, and curiosity. Some teenagers use drugs to escape emotional pain or to fit into a social group. Others may not fully understand the dangers due to lack of education. The consequences of drug misuse can be severe. It can damage physical and mental health, harm relationships, and lower academic performance. In some cases, it leads to addiction, crime, or even death. Families, schools, and communities are all affected. According to a 2023 World Health Organization report, over 13% of teenagers worldwide have used illegal drugs at least once. In the United States, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported that 10.9% of 12th graders used illicit drugs in the past year. Governments and schools have started campaigns to educate young people about the risks. Parents are also encouraged to have open conversations with their children. Preventing drug misuse is not just the responsibility of one person—it requires a community effort. If teenagers understand both the causes and the effects of drug misuse, they may make better choices. It is important to support and educate them before it’s too late.

The project began in March 2025, after the students observed that many residents in their neighborhood were placing recyclables in the wrong bins. This often led to contamination, which made the entire recycling process less effective. To solve the problem, the students designed a smart bin equipped with a camera and artificial intelligence software that can recognize different types of waste. When someone places an item in the bin, the AI analyzes it and gives instant feedback on whether it belongs in the plastic, paper, metal, or general waste section. After testing the system for one month in a public area, they reported a 40% improvement in recycling accuracy. The students believe that using technology like AI can encourage better habits and protect the environment. Their project has gained attention from city officials and is being considered for wider use across Changwon.

Brutalism and Baroque: Opposite Architectures, Shared Purpose

At first glance, they couldn’t be more different. Brutalism rejects ornamentation and reveals its structure in raw, exposed form. Baroque, in contrast, captivates with gold, curves, sculpture, and ceiling frescoes designed to stir emotion. These architectural styles seem to stand on opposite ends of a spectrum—but they share a crucial similarity: both reflect the values and purposes of the times in which they were born.
Brutalism emerged after World War II, during a time of destruction and urgent reconstruction. In an era when cities were in ruins and societies needed to rebuild quickly, architecture had to prioritize function over aesthetics. True to its name—béton brut, or raw concrete—Brutalism emphasized structural honesty by exposing its materials without finishes. Columns, walls, and windows were shown as they were, and the repeated patterns and massive forms mirrored the cold, harsh reality of the time while asserting a strong presence.
Baroque architecture, by contrast, arose in 17th-century Europe, during the height of absolute monarchies and the Catholic Church’s power. Its goal was to overwhelm the senses and inspire awe. Baroque architects favored curves over straight lines and ovals over circles, designing buildings like grand theatrical stages. Interiors were filled with gilded ornaments, sculptures, murals, and ceiling paintings, while dramatic lighting created striking contrasts of light and shadow. These weren’t just aesthetic choices—they were deliberate strategies to convey authority and divine glory.
Despite their extreme differences in style, both movements actively used space to leave a strong impression. Brutalism stimulated the senses through structure; Baroque, through decoration and light. Both embraced the technologies and materials of their time. Le Corbusier reimagined cities through concrete, while Bernini and Borromini expressed the power of God and kings through architecture.
Ultimately, Brutalism pursued honesty in function and structure, while Baroque aimed for emotional and symbolic grandeur. One rejected ornamentation; the other pushed it to its limits. Yet both styles, in their own way, spoke the language of their time—using architecture to convey the stories and struggles of their respective eras.
Architecture, in the end, is more than what we see. It is the voice and face of an age, etched in space.

To address digital dementia and promote healthier technology use

How? By providing digital wellbeing lessons, encouraging screen time breaks, and creating digital detox zones

Article:

Schools across the country have started introducing digital detox programs and digital wellbeing education this semester to address the issue of digital dementia and promote healthy digital use. Recent studies show that many students suffer from reduced memory and concentration because of constant exposure to digital devices. To tackle this, schools are introducing digital wellbeing education as part of their curriculum to teach students how to manage their screen time responsibly. Along with this, digital detox programs encourage students to take regular breaks from their devices and engage in offline activities. Some schools have set up "digital detox zones" where phones and tablets are not allowed during certain periods of the day. Teachers are also trained to identify signs of digital addiction and guide students toward healthier technology habits. Parents have welcomed these efforts, hoping it will improve their children's mental clarity and focus. Experts agree that such initiatives can help students maintain better cognitive health and develop balanced digital habits for the future.

Recently, a university in South Korea held a large disaster drill, pretending that a military helicopter had crashed and caused many injuries.
The purpose of the training was to check the national emergency response system and to improve the students’ rescue and patient transport skills. The drill was designed to feel like a real accident, with live radio communication, ambulance route control, and simulations of many patients being rescued at the same time.
Students practiced using the START system, which helps decide which patients need care first based on their condition and chances of survival. Each student had a different role and learned how to respond to various types of accidents and injuries.
Some students wore makeup to look like they had real injuries such as broken bones, burns, or deep cuts, so their classmates could practice making quick decisions and giving first aid. Through this training, students used what they learned in class in real-life-like situations, improving their emergency response and teamwork.
The paramedic department plans to continue these realistic trainings to help students grow into skilled and professional first responders in the future.

Trapped in the Feed: Korean Teens Lost Between Reality and Instagram

In today’s digital world, social media has become deeply woven into the daily lives of Korean teenagers. While it offers opportunities for connection and self-expression, it also brings growing mental health concerns. Many teens feel pressured to look perfect, stay popular, and keep up with online trends — all of which can negatively impact their well-being. According to a 2024 survey by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, nearly 70% of Korean teens experience stress or anxiety related to social media. This is especially common in urban areas like Seoul, where smartphone use is nearly universal among teens. This phenomenon has become more serious in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic increased online activity. As in-person interactions decreased, many teens turned to social media for communication and connection — often at the cost of their mental health. Teens often compare themselves to highly filtered and curated images they see on Instagram and TikTok. This can lead to low self-esteem, sleep issues, and even depression. Some also suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) or experience cyber bullying. To address these concerns, some schools have introduced digital literacy programs to help students critically understand online content. Mental health campaigns — often led by nurses or youth counselors — are encouraging teens to take breaks from social media and focus on real-life self-care. As a future nursing student, I believe nurses have an important role in supporting teen mental health — not just in hospitals, but in schools and communities. By educating young people on healthy digital habits and emotional self-care, we can help build a healthier future both online and offline.

The Age of AI Tutors: Personalized Learning or Deepening Educational Inequality?

May 26, 2025 | Education Section | Reporter Kim Seo-hyun

[SEOUL]
As of 2025, AI-powered personal tutoring systems, known as AI tutors, are rapidly gaining ground in classrooms both in South Korea and around the world. These technologies analyze each student’s strengths and weaknesses in real time, offering tailored feedback and study plans. While many praise their efficiency, growing concerns are being raised about whether such innovations are truly accessible to all.
A high school in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, introduced an AI tutor pilot program in March this year for all its students. Kim Yoo-jin, a teacher at the school, said, “Each student struggles with different areas, and the AI is impressive in how it designs individualized learning plans based on their data. It can be especially helpful for those lacking strong self-directed learning habits.”
Students are also reacting positively. One third-year student commented, “The AI explains what I got wrong and helps me understand it. I feel like it fits me better than going to a private academy.”
However, not all students have equal access to this technology.
Educational experts warn that the rise of AI tutoring may actually widen the existing digital divide. Most AI tutors require access to tablets, high-performance smartphones, or laptops, as well as stable internet connections. Students from low-income households often lack these resources, making it difficult for them to benefit equally.
Moreover, even when the technology is available, the ability to use and apply AI guidance depends heavily on a student’s digital literacy and study habits—skills that are often shaped by family background and prior educational experiences.
Professor Song Ji-yoon from the Department of Education at Seoul National University of Education noted, “AI is just a tool. Whether students benefit depends on how they use it. And that depends on conditions that are not evenly distributed.”
To address this, the South Korean government has announced a “Digital Learning Equity Initiative” and is piloting a program to provide laptops to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The key question is whether AI tutors will become a tool for opportunity or another barrier.
Unless we ensure that all students can start from the same digital baseline, technology may end up reinforcing existing inequalities rather than reducing them.

“AI can support students, but without the right environment and habits, it might just become another wall to climb.”
— Kim Yoo-jin, teacher in Gangdong-gu
