This source explains how fairytales are essential in childhood development for many aspects such as mental health and illness, transition issues, and lessons like resilience. This source helped me to connect aspects of the first season of Once Upon A Time to the features of fairy tales' impact in the real world. For example, in the first season Henry uses fairytales to cope with issues in his life, many of which are just transitional or developmental concerns. For instance, being adopted and the apprehension of being stuck in a town that didn’t give him all he wanted in life and making him feel he didn’t fulfil his potential. This source also focuses on the idea of “fairy tales as mirrors of ourselves” which can help me further understand the effects of fairytales and childhood affairs or the transition of childhood into adulthood.

This source enabled me to understand the success of the tv series Once Upon A Time and helped grow my knowledge about why so many people enjoy watching this program. The series acts as a “show for everyone.” It has found its popularity because it caters to a variety of people and all age groups. The show adds a modern twist to the original Disney characters we already know and feel connected to. This creates a sense of familiarity but also aspects of the unknown which makes this show appeal to so many. The television program gives us a sense of childhood while also including parts of mystery and darkness that helps intrigue people. They touch on aspects of the Grimm’s brothers which help grow my understanding about the connection between the Grimm’s and the writers of Once Upon A Time.

This source explains the connection between fairytales and physcology and can help me understand the connection to the real world aspects that fairytales influence. It explains the childhood programming impacts of environment and DNA as well as how they are similar but also differ from one another. It touches on how childhood tales can be used as a coping method for abuse or upbringing which can lead to physiological issues that are able to affect their life later on in adulthood. It explains how childhood programming is actually a form of reprogramming your DNA. To be more elaborate, how it is able to change DNA based on learning through environments. I can use this source to include the idea of how childhood programming can impact the psyche and developments in younger or later years of life.

This source gave me an understanding of the statistics of season one which also helped open my eyes to their major decline of enjoyment leading up to season seven. The source was very helpful in assisting my inquiry questions such as why the views declined by so much? When did the news start to go down? And how or if this is connected to the childhood programming aspect of the show or another aspect. This is a great source to have because it gives me the background knowledge needed to understand many of the other source I used.

This source helped me understand viewers point of view on the show and also assisted my knowledge of the ratings given from the source above. Many people used the same concept of magic to explain their reviews. Such as : “Magical” which was a review of 10/10. They proceeded to explain how they enjoyed the classic fairy tales with a twist as well as a combination of their favourite tales. Whereas other people who labelled their reviews as “Lost Its Magic” thought the show became “cheesy and shallow.” This helps me understand how the decline in views happened and why the enjoyment rate fell. Some also stated how they used to love the show, but now not so much because of the changes made to the simple tales, making it too complicated. This lends me a helping hand in understanding that some fairytale aspects need to be kept in the show in order to keep viewers interested.

This was a source that helped me understand the stages of fairy tales and the aspect that is shown the most as well as the part that intrigues the majority of audience’s: the hero's journey. It explains some points we have already learned about in class such as the call to action, the hero leaving on a quest, meeting companions, defeating evil, and saving the damsel. It also talks about other impacts of fairy tales such as coming of age stories, self image, reality, nightmares, and fairytales as bad influences. It explains how although fairytales are good for development, there are also downsides to the bright and fun they display. This has opened my eyes to other perspectives about fairy tales which will help me create rebuttals if needed in my paper and also aids my own knowledge about the various impacts fairytales have on individuals.

This source identifies how childhood programming impacts adulthood too. It touches on learning through life experiences and how this may enable us to push through life’s issues or stressors. It acknowledges that fairy tales which were originally rewritten and adapted by the Grimm’s brothers for adults have changed into tales for kids. They also explain the idea of spiritual development and God. They explain how this learning takes place in smaller groups or even alone, hence why reading these tales are important in childhood upbringing and how they impact maturing into adulthood. I can use this source in order to understand how aspects of Once Upon A Time are impacting their older audience or develop knowledge about spirituality within the show to understand their success.

This source went straight to the point about the use of fairytales as a sense of “self help.” It spoke about fairy tales helping therapy patients, assisting individuals overcome their fears or life struggles, aiding emotional healing or development, and also helping grow one's imagination. I believe this source opens my eyes to the bigger picture of fairytales and everyday use to bettering oneself. This source can identify many ways in which a simple fairytale can change someone’s life for the better. I believe it will also allow me to make references that I, myself can relate to personally. This also lets me latch on to Henry’s character in season one and how fairytales helped the young boy overcome all of the topics listed above in the first sentence.

This was a very eye opening source as well. It spoke about the realities for fairytales, but touched on a lot of the harder ones to comprehend. It talks about the diversity, morals, appropriateness, and culture of fairy tales. It acknowledged the diversity of fairy tales and how wherever you go in the world, characters will always vary depending on the version where it was told. This can help us to see the differences between humans all over the globe and understand the idea of diversity within these stories. Different variations are also capable of speaking upon individuals and their morals or values that teach topics such as love or honour. They are a great learning tool for younger children and educate us on issues. For example, sexism and the damsel in distress. Or racism and descrimination against minorities like step-mothers. This can show us clarity to the ideas that although fairytales are now intended for kids, they may not be totally appropriate for them. This is an amazing source to use in a rebuttal context to see various sides and perspectives to the idea of fairy tales as well as to acknowledge the horrible truths behind magic and lighthearted stories.

This source was important and gave me background knowledge about aspects of fairytales' influence using society as an example. This helped me to understand how fairytales work in movies which can impact all people watching, including children. It incorporated ideas of gender roles, manipulation, hierarchy, and also gives background about the connection to the Grimm’s Brothers. In the end, it gives an explanation to how these impact children’s views of society. For example, kids can see other women as a threat with the theme of pinning women against each other in the fairytales they consume. It can also teach children they need to be beautiful because it is the only acceptable trait to have and the only way you will be successful. Finally, it acknowledges how women ‘require men’ in order to survive because women need to be saved by them to get a happy ending. In general, this is a good source to open my eyes to the bigger picture of how fairy tales impact children and their developmental process in society. I can use this source to give links to the real world, like films, and other types of literature.

VisikoKnox-Johnson, Leilani. The Positive Impacts of Fairy Tales for Children. 14th ed., University of Hawai'i at Hilo, 2016.

Driscoll, Molly.
