The court was filled with many people. There were older adults to mothers with their babies waiting for Tom Robinson's trial to begin. I tugged Scout to the seats where all the white people sat, but they were all taken. I looked up and saw Reverend Sykes hovering over the lower level of the court from the balcony where all the blacks stood to see the trial. We decided to go up there and sit with Reverend Sykes. From these seats, Scout and I had a clear view of the whole courtroom. I looked over at the judge, Judge Taylor, and noted that he had an informal fashion of presenting himself to the court because he was propping his feet on the podium. I frowned. Hopefully this case is taken seriously. Then, the crowd become dead silent. The trial began.

Mr. Ewell came forward. I could tell by the way he kept himself that I didn't like him. I know that Atticus is supposed to question Mr. Ewell and prove Tom Robinson innocent, so I don't like the fact that someone is trying to beat my father in court. Mr. Ewell's story seemed pretty unreliable. Atticus questioned him why he didn't call a doctor for Mayella first if he found her being raped. Mr. Ewell simply said that he wanted to catch Tom Robinson first, but I ain't goin' to believe a word he says. After that, Atticus asked Mr. Ewell if he could write his name and Atticus noticed that he was left-handed. The person who had beaten Mayella was most likely left-handed. "We caught him," I whispered to Scout.

I watched as Mayella started crying. Out of no where, I feel bad for her. Atticus started to ask her questions, but Mayella cut him short by saying that he was mocking her by calling her "ma'am". This makes me confused. Why is Mayella offended by my father being polite to her? I just don't understand. Mayella's story seemed to contract a bit with what her father, Mr. Ewell, had said, but I guess I will see how Atticus responds.

It's finally time to hear what Tom Robinson has to say...I've had enough of Mr. Ewell and Mayella's side of the story and I'm interested to see what the accused has to say. All I know is that Atticus is on Tom's side and is innocent. Hopefully the judge can see this too. Tom Robinson's left arm is injured so I don't see how he could have beaten Mayella on the right side of her face like Atticus remarked. So far Tom Robinson is answering questions without any hesitation. It's pretty obvious to me that he is not guilty. When the opposing lawyer started asking Tom questions, the lawyer was being really cruel. Why does he keep disrespecting Tom and calling him 'boy'? I don't like this lawyer. Atticus is a much better lawyer than him.

Atticus is giving his closing argument now..I am very glad that this trial is coming to an end - I am so tired and hungry. Atticus said that according to Thomas Jefferson, "all men are created equal". Never have I ever agreed with a statement so much. Just because Tom Robinson is black doesn't mean he shouldn't have any biased disadvantage in court. I know Tom Robinson is innocent and if Atticus doesn't win the case I will be extremely disappointed in the court. Like Atticus said to the jury, "In the name of God, do your duty".

The verdict for Tom Robinson's trial has been revealed and Tom Robinson has been deemed guilty. This is not right! How can the court decide that Tom Robinson is GUILTY? Didn't they even listen to what Mr. Ewell and Mayella said? Their stories clearly contradicted each other! All of the evidence my father said proves that Tom Robinson is innocent. I can't believe this actually happened. I'm going home now and I will never be able to look at the people of Maycomb the same ever again.

My father says that he knows the verdict of the case ain't right. I asked him why the jury said that Tom Robinson was guilty and he said that it's because Tom's black. How can the color of someone's skin determine whether they committed a crime or not? This is an outrage! Atticus told me that I shouldn't treat other people like that and that if any white man no matter how wealthy they are treated someone with disrespect, they are trash. Atticus said that there is still hope for Tom Robinson because his case is being reviewed. I hope that Tom is found innocent and gets to see his family soon...it must be tough not being able to see your wife or children.

"Golly Moses!" I said. Calpurnia showed me and Atticus all the food in the kitchen that could last us for weeks. Calpurnia said that the people from the trial left the food on our doorstep - I think it's because they really appreciate Atticus for defending Tom Robinson since he is innocent in the case. I'm still mad at the jury for concluding that Tom was guilty. Thinking about the trial is making my brain hurt! How can people be so stupid enough to not like somebody jus 'cause they black? Well, there's nothing I can do about it. Might as well go enjoy some food.
