My masque dress is inspired by my favorite musician, Kate Bush. Her album, "Hounds of Love", includes a suite of songs known as The Ninth Wave. They tell the story of a woman swept overboard and alone in the water. The form-fitting dress represents the choking cold water, with the arm fringes symbolizing icicles. The full half-skirt is blue to represent the wave that may have capsized the ship, with foam frothing at the bottom.

Since I'm terrible at designing my own stuff, I usually recreate prior existing costumes. This is the most elaborate one I have made so far. It's up for debate if it would fit a modern day masque. On the one hand, a masque means pretending to be someone else, while on the other hand a modern masque might draw more from modern shapes and styles. I am fonder of historical shapes anyways.

Hi!!!! Heres is my costume design. I chose Lady Mary Crawley, because I love the Eduardian fashion and that character is very deared to me for I felt I was watching me on a mirror, we had many things in common. And I loved the good taste of this character, always wearing beautiful dresses and accesories (specially on her head). I love wearing gloves, hats, and long dresses for special social events.

This is my gown based upon the painting "Bella Nani" by Veronese. The gown itself appears not too out of the typical style, however important elements change that: The size of the jewelry is far larger than typical and the cut/paned sleeves are fairly rare in Italian portraiture. If there wasn't a German hat in the way, the girdle is the size of a woman's hand and draped in emeralds. Because no one can confirm the identity of the woman in the painting with certainty, it has been theorized she could be a "pin up" girl, and therefore the unusual elements are a part of her exaggerated charm rather than a reflection of reality.

This costume is inspired in the African religions that are part of my cultural heritage in Brazil. Yemanjá is the Goddess of the sea. Traditionally she wears strings of shells over her face, which coincidentally works a bit like a mask. Forbidden to practice their religions, slaves in Brazil matched each of their Gods to a Saint from the Catholic Church and this imagery persists today, when Yemanjá is normally associated with the Virgin Mary. In my costume I matched a classic Virgin Mary Robe to my sea inspired design.

The Ninth Wave
The Ninth Wave
My masque dress is inspired by my favorite musician, Kate Bush. Her album, "Hounds of Love", includes a suite of songs known as The Ninth Wave. They tell the story of a woman swept overboard and alone in the water. The form-fitting dress represents the choking cold water, with the arm fringes symbolizing icicles. The full half-skirt is blue to represent the wave that may have capsized the ship, with foam frothing at the bottom.

And I loved the good taste of this character, always wearing beautiful dresses and accesories (specially on her head). I love wearing gloves, hats, and long dresses for special social events.

This owl is one of many masks I made for the children's choir in a production of Benjamin Britten's 'Noye's Fludde.' It's more like a medieval mystery play than a Stuart masque, though still very impressive when everyone is disguised and playing a character.

This is my gown base

Costume of Yemanjá Goddess of the Sea (Simone Taylor)
This costume is inspired in the African religions that are part of my cultural heritage in Brazil. Yemanjá is the Goddess of the sea. Traditionally she wears strings of shells over her face, which coincidentally works a bit like a mask. Forbidden to practice their religions, slaves in Brazil matched each of their Gods to a Saint from the Catholic Church and this imagery persists today, when Yemanjá is normally associated with the Virgin Mary. In my costume I matched a classic Virgin Mary Robe to my sea inspired design.

With artistic help from my sister we chose to interpret a modern masque as a live disney performance such as Disney on Ice. Anna from Frozen was our character because she is so relatable for young girls - and her clothing is beautiful but completely practical for going on missions in the cold.
Hello My name is Luis. Im a fashion Designer . this is my vision of a masque Ensemble I was inspired by the Elizabethan fashions but with an approach to modernity with a front opening corset.

A modern masque...
A modern masque...
would probably be exposing as much skin as humanly possible while hiding behind a teeny tiny mask. The morals portrayed would probably be in line with a social movement #mydressisnotconsent

I have always been drawn to bright yellow and I love how it goes well with pink, orange, and red. I imagine the bottom of the dress would be made out of tool to give it a slight fluff and airy feel to it. I also imagine the bottom would explode in color. I added the flowers and lace detail because I also love those things on clothes. To make the bottom of the dress and mask stand out, I kept the rest of the outfit simple. The fan has music notes on it to incorporate my involvement in music. I have played the saxophone for twelve years. Another feature of my dress would be hidden zipper pockets so I don't need to carry a purse.

Tate Ohl

The red/white trousers is the colour of the signs to Rome and the scallop shells on the top and as earrings is the sign of the Way of St James. The blue and yellow star headdress is to represent the European Union across which these trials travel. The white top has the keys of St Peter on. The cloak is to represent the style of the medieval pilgrims and is has a design of paths across it and is blue to represent travelling under the open skies. The character carries a pilgrim staff and is wearing Roman style sandals.

For my modern day masque I picked Disney’s Tangled movie and the character of Rapunzel. I picked her because she’s an excellent choice for a play for all ages. In the Disney version it’s full of important life lessons in various characters. Examples would be; step out of your comfort zone, don’t believe everything you hear, animals provide comfort, things aren’t always what they seem, hobbies are very important, life is full of small, perfect moments, never give up, and you haveall you need inside of you to make a difference and to conquer anything you face. In this version her hair has magical healing powers and she learns she truly is a princess I picked this dress because it represents her love of the stars and her love for painting. It’s purple to represent her character. There’s a lantern to represent the ones that go up every year on her birthday. There’s her favorite friend Pascal from the tower on her shoulder. And a masque to represent the traditional masques from the 17th century.

I chose this character from Disney’s movie Tangled. I picked this character because it represents her live for stars and art as well as her true character dress of purple. Tangled makes an excellent masque for children as well as adults. It has so many important life lessons within the script. Rapunzel learns her true identity, to leap outside her comfort zone, to learn she has healing powers in her hair and that she has a family. Her masque represents the era of masks in the 17th century for their plays.

It wasn’t a particular character per say but I wanted something that was bright and vibrant as well as playful with length. I liked how the women in the masques played with sheer fabrics and length as a way to be independent and in control. The meaning I was trying to convey was joy and bursts of laughter through the colors.

Since it says 'modern-day' masque (we can take the Met Gala as an example of that.) because "L' historie du chevalier des grieux et de manon lescaut' was written in 1731 (The novel in which the ballet is based on) & that makes it so very unlikely to be a thing during the Stuart time. Still If it was for back then and If I were to go not as performer I would like something similar to Manon's dresses but adjusted & fit for a Stuart Masque.

My masque costume is inspired by the figure of mercy, in the tradition of featuring virtues as characters. I used the ‘quality of mercy’ speech from ‘The Merchant of Venice’ as inspiration, particularly the idea of mercy being like gentle rain. The bias satin base dress would move and flow over the body, while the sheerness of the chiffon over skirt and sleeves add an ethereal quality, as do the crystals and sequins.

My costume is inspired by medieval like motifs. Such as the gold circlet, braided long hair, and the armored dragon scale sleeve. Burgundy, blue, and black. Dark blue because because its the closest I got to navy blue, burgundy because it contrates nice with blue and black. A dragon silver pin to hold the coat/dress together along with a small lacing at the side. Tights and boots ready for any occasion.

My costume is inspired by Medieval motifs. The dress/coat represent what a queen would wear for battle. The coat is black and has lines of dark blue and burgundy. Dark blue because it was the nearest color I had to represent navy blue which I think has a royal but also military like of a color. The burgundy because it contrasts well with blue and black. The tights or trousers are a dark grey with black buckled boots. The costume has a dragon pin to keep the the coat closed as well it has lacing. The gold dragon scale represent a bit of armor. It also has a gold circlet and long braided hair.

I decided to design a costume based on the character Queen Guinevere, from the stories of Sir Lancelot and King Arthur. I think Guinevere is very courageous and righteous, and of course she's a queen. She is also one of those characters I've always wanted to be. I think gowns from this era are very romantic as well, so that being said, I feel it would be perfect for a masque. I'm not too skilled in designing clothes, but I think it turned out alright. I wanted it more of a true red, than a magenta, but it works. In reality, I'd add jewels on the sweetheart neckline, sleeves, and hat veil to make it sparkle.
