For this project, I had to choose between the themes of ‘Worship’, ‘Mechanics’ or ‘Metamorphism’. Both mechanics and metamorphism interested me but as I had dealt with metamorphism previously in college I decided that I would challenge myself and explore the concept of mechanics. I created some brainstorms in order to figure out what aspect of this topic I wanted to examine.

The shapes and designs of cogs and gears was something that I really liked so I began sketching. The circular shapes reminded me that mechanics deals with twisting, turning, pressure and forces in order to create movement.

As I was drawing these images, I noticed that the cogs were covered in rust. They were old, used, worn and some were even broken. I realised that these objects were part of an outdated way of working, the old mechanical and often physical and hand operated method. Nowadays technology has taken over and there have been many electronic devices invented and created that replace the mechanical processes and products of the past.

During the demonstrations I took note of how printmaking in the classroom should be done. The importance of the layout and the print process flow are two key pieces of information that would be very useful to have up on the wall. The print process flow gives the steps of how to make a successful print and the print studio layout ensures that the student is aware of where to ink up and also where to have clean hands. This is important when handling the students own prints and to make sure that the area is clean for the next student.

The first printmaking technique I explored was drypoint etching. This involves engraving an image into a plate with a hard pointed needle or scribe. When I was happy with my image, I used a combination of screws and scribes to etch into the acetate sheet. The needle is used like a pencil in order to draw an image onto the plate. The plate is then inked, rolled through a press and transferred onto paper. My drawing consisted of a pattern of cogs and in some sections the gear was actually broken and had a piece missing.

To test my image, I rolled out a thin layer of black oil paint using a printmaking roller. The ink has to be thin when applying it to your plate in order to avoid the ink getting into the engraved lines that make up your image. The plate is then rolled with ink. Newspaper is then used to get rid of the excess ink that sits around the plate. This wiping away method ensures that the ink moves into the lines that you have scratched away and it also cleans the background of the image. The plate can be underwiped and overwiped so experimentation is necessary here in order to get the correct and desired outcome. I have a habit of overwiping my plates as I like a clear and contrasting background. A registration sheet is a good idea, it allows you to place the image on your page just the way you want it (keeps the image straight. allows for more than one plate to be printed and allows you to keep borders on the page).

The paper that you print onto should be soaked in water for about 10 - 15 minutes. While inking up your plate, the paper should be soaking. When the time is up, the paper is removed with clean hands, and placed onto newsprint. To remove the excess water, a sheet of newsprint is placed over the wet page and wiped. The registration page, protective acetate sheet, drypoint plate, damp paper and dry newsprint are then placed on top of one another on the printing press. The level is set, the blankets are placed on top of all these sheets and the print then gets rolled. When the print has been through the press, the image is then transported to the drying rack. The press is then cleaned and ready for the next person using the press.

Paper is then placed on top of the lino block (using the cardboard registration lines as a reference) and rubbed with a wooden spoon or by hand. Pressure is key here in order to get the whole of the lino block to transfer onto the page. While printing the lines of my drawings also came out on top of my print. I thought this would interfere with my prints but thankfully it didnt. After printing all of my edition, I cleaned the plate with water and a cloth and began cutting away everything that I wanted to keep yellow (the lines).

Ganson describes his work as a cross between mechanical engineering and choreography. Some of his machines have a simple function other machines do nothing at all. Ganson’s sculpture have a somewhat childlike and playful side to them.

In Warhol's Marilyn piece, the image is screen printed in an array of different colours. The images are all the same but Warhol's use of colour transforms each image into something that is quite different to the next. I thought that his work was useful to look at when dealing with print as it shows that colour and choice are very important especially in a lino reduction plate because as soon as the image is cut away, it can never be reprinted.

Leo Kadele is an artist who lives and works in Croatia. Kadele uses painting in correlation with film, texts and performance to document unstable notions of reality. He is interested in the correlation between contemporary art and digital culture, working with virtual reality as both a means towards and a subject of contemporary visual and performing arts. The lines and mark making within these pieces reminded me of the lines that I created in my lino pieces. Kadeles use of colour is also very intriguing and is something that influenced me withing my lino piece. I am so used to working in black and white, I found it refreshing to work with colour during this workshop.
